Dr. Jimmie Dodd Obituary

Aug. 6, 1931 - Aug. 26, 2008

Dr. Jimmie Dale Dodd, 77, of Bryan went home to the Father in Heaven on Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Dr. Dodd died following a valiant battle against Alzheimer's disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bryan. Dr. Dodd will be buried with full military honors at the Steep Hollow Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 29, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, a rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.

A native of Esbon, Kansas, Dr. Dodd has lived in the B/CS community since 1963 and was active in numerous community activities.

A man among men, Dr. Dodd was one of those professors who made a difference in every life he touched. Receiving back to back B.A. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State College at Fort Hayes, he went on to receive his doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan in 1960 and was a graduate of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1964 specializing in Rangeland Ecology and Management Department at Texas A&M University, and as an Assistant to the Director of Program Development.

A well published scholar, Dr. Dodd was also a Fellow in the American Association of the Advancement of Science, Chairman of the Guayule Administrative Committee and a winner of the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award.

A true hunter and fisherman, Dr. Dodd was also proud of his military service in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post 159 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to service to the education facets of our area, Dr. Dodd was also a member of the St. Joseph Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

Dr. Dodd was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Everett Dodd of Esbon, Kan.; brother-in-law, Richard Fowler and nephew Kim Fowler of Wyoming.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lee and four children; son, Glenn Dodd and wife Tammy of Unalakleet, Alaska; daughter, Tina and son-in-law Tom Broughton of Bryan, Denise Marihugh of Webster, Texas and Linda and son-in-law, Brian Swales of Cypress, Texas; stepchildren, Jennifer and Michael Hutt of Kilgore, Texas and Lori and Shane Bond of Snook, Texas; sister, Shirley Fowler of Riverton, Wyo.; three grandchildren, three step grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; former wife, Connie Dodd.

I have many fond memories of Jim during our growing up phase in the Esbon, Kansas. Especially 4-H and school activities. but most of all assisting him the year he won the Kansas State Plowing contest. I am sure he will be missed by all his friends and family.

Because of him & other young men & women we have our freedom in this great country. We thank him for also being a member of the American Legion. It is our privilege to provide the final military honors. Thank you for your contributions to the field of Agriculture at Texas A&M University. May God's Speed Be With You.
