Edward A. Hubacek
June 12, 1940 - August 28, 2022
Edward Anthony Hubacek, 82, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022 with his family by his side.
Edward was born June 12, 1940 in Bryan, Texas where he built his home and raised his family. He was raised as a devout Catholic, and as a young boy, he attended St. Joseph Catholic School. Through the school, church, and community leagues, he discovered his passion for both football and baseball.
He met his future wife, Betty DeHart (Hubacek), at his Bryan High School graduation party in 1959. They were married in 1961 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and on August 19, 2022, they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Together, they were blessed with 2 children: Terri Hubacek Sager and Todd Hubacek. In 1968, Ed and Betty built their forever home in the community of Smetana. It was here that he taught his family how to grow from the ground up, harvesting a variety of vegetables in his immense garden that provided for both his family and his community. Their home became the gathering place for many friends and family, as Ed & Betty always had a warm welcome for everyone that walked through the door.
His career began as an A/C Technician at the TAMU Physical Plant. From there, he went on to start the A/C Refrigeration Department at Bryan ISD. Here, he served as a beloved supervisor for 25 years before retiring in 1995. As a devout community member, he also served for many years in the Precinct 4's Volunteer Fire Department and as a Volunteer Fireman for TAMU in the 1960's.
Ed was a devoted Father & Pappy (grandfather). He shared his passion for sports with his family as a little league coach, season ticket holder for Texas A&M football games, and host for countless football watch parties. He also loved the outdoors; he and Betty purchased land in the hill county where the family loved to hunt, camp, fish, and explore. Cooking was another of Ed's favorite things to do, and Pappy's fish and BBQ ribs were his specialties at family get-togethers.
Ed always cherished his Czech heritage. Growing up around him, all of his children and grandchildren picked up on Czech words, phrases, and songs. He loved polka music, and he always enjoyed a good game of 42 (Dominos), gambling trips with friends and family, and a pivo (beer) or a tasty margarita. Not only was he a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, but he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the KJZT Family Life Fraternal Organization, and the Usher's Club at St. Joseph's Church.
Everything he did, he did it with love for his family. As he worked hard to build the life he dreamed of, he always said, "If a task be once begun, never leave it 'til it's done; be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all!"
Edward is survived by his wife, Betty Hubacek; and their children, daughter, Terri Sager of Bryan, TX; son, Todd Hubacek and wife Michell of Normangee, TX. He is also survived by his sisters, Bernie Koronka and her husband Louis, Helen Fagan and her husband Bobby. He also leaves behind his 5 grandchildren, Justin Hubacek, Magen Parsley and her husband Cody, Brayden Crook and her husband Jonathan, Courtney Hrncir and her husband Kaleb, and Eric Sager and 6 great-grandchildren, Isabella Hubacek, Ayden Hubacek, Kace Parsley, Kynlee Crook, Rhett Hrncir, and Aurora Hrncir. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bessie Hubacek; and his 3 brothers, Frankie, Tim, and David Hubacek, as well as 1 sister, Elizabeth Hubacek.
