Herbert H. O'Quinn
Nov 18, 1938 - Sep 11, 2025
Herbert H. O'Quinn passed peacefully from this life on September 11, 2025, at home with his family in College Station, Texas. He was born November 18, 1938, to Herbert and Anna Loyce (Holcomb) at the Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton, Texas. As an infant, he was nicknamed Bubba as he was subsequently known throughout his life.
He was the husband of wife Betty (Bennett) for 64 years, with sons Michael and Byron, and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins that were treasured and most important in his life.
The middle child with older sister Lou Ella and younger brother Van Edward, Bubba spent his formative years in Boling, Texas living an idyllic childhood. His days were spent with close friends along Caney Creek engaging in wonder and mischief. His father worked at the Texas Gulf Sulfur Company and life centered around "the company," church, school, horses, and close-knit neighbors. Throughout his life, he would reference with great fondness to his childhood adventures with friends and neighbors of Boling.
After his father was transferred to Beaumont where a love for playing football was generated, the family then moved to Liberty Texas. It is there where he met Betty and became close to her family. His time playing Liberty High football generated many happy memories and lifelong friendships that he often recalled with great fondness. After saving enough money, he and Betty married while in college.
Bubba attended Sam Houston State University and remained a proud Bearcat throughout his life where he served on numerous boards and advisory committees.
After graduation he also started work for "the company" first in Newgulf when sons Michael and Byron were born, then transferred to Beaumont where he subsequently because plant manager. Supervising hundreds of employees, sulfur vessels, multiple business units, and railcars, he established a reputation as an industry leader. He was then asked to become international project manager, primarily in Saudia Arabia, that ultimately became a major component of his professional life.
After an international purchase of the company, Bubba moved to other aspects of the sulfur industry first in Savannah, Georgia, then back to Texas in Galveston County. He transitioned into constructing and erecting major conveyor systems that took him all over the world and working later in life. He oversaw large scale projects in places such as Oman, Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, Canada along with the erecting the largest conveyor system in the U.S. In all his work endeavors, Bubba always had a loyal following of employees because he treated them with respect, empathy, and expected excellence.
Notwithstanding his 40-plus years of distinguished success, he was most proud and happiest being with and relishing family. Bubba never missed a baseball game, school extracurricular
event, church function, or family reunion. The family went to church every Sunday, he taught adult Sunday school classes, and faith was a cornerstone.
His father gave Bubba an appreciation and love for horses. Owning and breeding racehorses gave him great joy, and he always found solace at the barn. He loved being with his uncle, a pioneer in Texas horse racing, and with his cousins at the track. He also loved the Hill Country, spending time at and on his cousin's property ventures, hunting, and observing wildlife especially being with his uncle in the Hill Country.
Bubba loved his family, his faith, his country, and his varied interests. He was a kind soul, generous to all, and all who met and knew him loved him equally.
