John Alvis Obituary

Alvis Sr., Lt. Col. John Mark

November 9, 1937 - April 21, 2024

Lt. Col. John Mark Alvis, Sr., a distinguished U.S. Army veteran and successful business executive, passed away on April 21,2024, leaving behind a legacy cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on November 9, 1937, Lt. Col. Alvis led a remarkable life filled with integrity, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to his values. He graduated from Texas A&M University in the class of '60 with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, and continued to pursue knowledge by obtaining a Master's in Aeronautical Engineering in 1970 from A&M, as well as an MBA in 1980 from Troy State.

Through his military service which included two combat tours in Vietnam (1965-1966 and 1967-1968) and a prestigious posting as the Aviation Commander/Korea Resident Engineer, Far East District, Seoul South Korea (1972-1973), as well as in his post military career affiliation with the "Been Shot At" group (BSA for short), Lt. Col. Alvis always exemplified steadfastness, bravery, and honor in all of his endeavors. His dedication to duty and country earned him the respect and admiration of all those he served alongside.

Lt. Col. Alvis was known for his kind and generous nature. He was someone who never spoke ill of others and who could always be relied upon for his unwavering support. His word was his bond-a true testament to his character.

In his leisure time, Lt. Col. Alvis found joy in cheering for Fightin' Texas Aggie sports teams, particularly football, basketball, and baseball. He also delighted in exploring the world through travel, and enjoyed the serenity of sailing with his family and friends.

He is now reunited with his parents, Mary and Thomas Alvis, and his brother, Bill Alvis.

Lt. Col. Alvis is survived by his loving spouse Elsie R. Alvis;  his children, John M. Alvis Jr. (Nancy) and William T. Alvis (Brooke); and grandchildren Darin, Abbey, and Kira.

Lt. Col. John Mark Alvis, Sr.'s memory will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His honor, integrity, and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all as we remember him and celebrate a life well-lived.

A Visitation will take place May 16, 2024 at Hillier Funeral Home of COLLEGE STATION from 5pm - 8pm. The Funeral Service and Reception will be held on May 17, 2024 from 10am - 12pm and immediately followed by a Graveside Service.

If Mark struck you as being one of the good guys, you got him right. Like some who read this, I have known Mark since we met under strenuous circumstances in 1956. He was genuinely helpful to others, always willing to extend a hand. Any group that included Mark was a better group, any group that lost him was sorely diminished. Today, we as a group of established friends are less, and not just numerically, but in every way I can think of. We will miss Mark Alvis from our ranks. Gary Todd '60
