Joseph Frazer Obituary

Joseph Frazer

May 1, 1932 - February 9, 2021

Joseph Hugh Frazer, died February 9, 2021 in Penney Farms, FL.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Georgia McWhorter Frazer; daughters, Mary Orsted, Hilary Abeger and Henry, Georgia Clarke and Mike; and grandchildren, John Orsted, Caleb Boberg, Nils Boberg and Jeremy Boberg; brother and sister-in-law Purnal "Judge" and Pat McWhorter; and niece Sarah and nephew Dan (Candace) McWhorter. His daughter, Valerie Lenore, preceded him in death.

Joe was born May 1, 1932 in Buffalo, New York to Joseph Hugh and Katherine Lenore Leatherbury Frazer. He attended St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE (graduated 1949), Johns Hopkins University (BA 1953), Berkeley/Yale Divinity (MA 1956), and Texas A&M University (PhD 1975).

After marrying Georgia in June 1956, he was called by the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, serving initially as a Deacon and subsequently ordained to the priesthood in St. John's Church, Fort Worth. As an Episcopal priest, he served in the Diocese of Dallas at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration and the former St. Anne's, Oak Cliff. He then served in the Diocese of Texas as the Rector of St. Peter's, Brenham, and St. Andrew's, Bryan.

In 1983, Joseph's ordination was recognized by Rome. As a Roman Catholic priest, he served in the Diocese of Austin at St. Margaret of Scotland (Anglican rite) in Austin, TX and at St. Francis Catholic Church, Franklin, Tx.

A supporter of faith-based resources throughout his life, Joe was a co-founder of the former St. Michael's Episcopal School – Bryan; and served as chaplain at both St. Michael's Catholic Academy – Austin and the former Brackenridge Hospital – Austin.

In 2005, he and Georgia retired to Penney Retirement Community (PRC), Penney Farms, FL. Georgia and the family are grateful for the years of friendship and support they enjoyed at PRC, most recently for the excellent and compassionate care provided to Joe during his illness.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Sacred Heart Mission Church in Green Cove Springs, Florida.

My condolences to the Frazer family. I remember when the Frazer family came to St. Mary's Cathedral in 1983-84. Mrs. Frazer was my brother's 4th grade teacher and I was blessed to become good friends with JoJo Frazer, my 8th grade year at St. Mary's. I remember your parents as so kind and thoughtful. I am grateful you all were a part of my life. I have fond memories of the Frazer family. You all are in my prayers.

Father Joe was a wonderful leader for the new parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Franklin, TX. My husband received instruction in the faith and Fr. Joe was instrumental in getting our Nullity of Marriage approved so that he could marry us in the Church. Georgia's beautiful voice is also missed greatly. RIP Father Joe--you are worthy of Heaven's glory!

I cannot think of my childhood without thinking of Father Frazer. I grew up at St. Andrew's, Bryan on Sundays, and St. Michael's Academy during the week. He and Mrs. Frazer were so good to my dad and me. My condolences to the family and my fervent prayers for peace.

Dearest Georgia and Family,
I have thought of you so often and wondered where you were. I was sad when you'all left St. Andrews but understood. I pray for your strength during this difficult time. I lost my Bill three months ago . . .not easy but expected at this stage in our life. Love to all, Helen Phillips
