Matthew was Master of ceremonies at my daughter Kyre's wedding to his old friend Ellen Hobbs. I did not know him for long ,but if he was a friend of Ellen that's good enough for me. The messages from friends and family, both in number and content are revealing of what an exceptional person he was .

Dear Sam,
I never knew Matthew but knowing you, I miss him.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew with humor to brighten the days of all around him.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew loved old classic films – the kind that showed family love and togetherness.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew loved pets.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew enjoyed collecting things like trains or toys or porcelain or rugs or art. The list goes on and on.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew enjoyed fishing and good wine and friends.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew enjoyed giving gifts.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew enjoyed making charity a part of his life.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew lived his life with no excuses, no apologies.
Knowing you, I imagine Matthew was kind, honest, sincere and truly cared about his family.
If my imagination has missed some of Matthew’s qualities, it is only because I have only had the privilege of knowing you and not him as well. I regret that the prayers of your many, many friends could not overcome the cancer which took his life. Our prayers now will be for you and your family to remember all the good which Matthew brought to your world. Our prayers will now be for God to hold Matthew close and give him the comfort of Heaven.
The Rudder Family stands with you in this time of grief. You have been a rock to us in our times of need. Please know that we are here for you in yours.
With Love,
Bud, Anne, Linda, Bob

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Matthew was a student of mine at Texas A&M many years ago. I must admit that, as a relatively new instructor, it was a bit intimidating to have such a scholar in the entry-level course. Matthew quickly showed his humility and compassion to the entire class. I have admired that ever since. I know that he touched many lives while he was with us. My prayer is that you will be comforted by many fond memories and will keep his spirit alive by sharing the stories of his life.

I was so sorry to hear about our earthly loss of Matthew! He was my date to Ring Dance in college, a friend and coworker in the MSC, and classmate in the political science department! Though we did not keep in touch much after college, I always admired Matt and was sure that he was living an interesting and exciting life! When I remember Matt, I think of fun, laughter, thoughtful conversations, music, charm and grace! What a way to be remembered. My sincerest condolences to his loved ones, and may I extend my hope to you that Matt is with our Lord. - Leslie Willingham Moulton

Dear Sam, Janice, and family,
I was shocked to read of Matt's death in the paper. I did not even know that he had been ill. All of the letters already on his guest book are testaments to the life that he lived and to the lives of others that he touched. The world is a better place because he was here with us for a time. I know that your grief is almost unbearable at this time, but you have much of which to be proud. May your many wonderful memories sustain you through this difficult time.

Dear Wood and Reeves Family,
I am deeply saddened by your loss. Matthew had a geniunely kind spirit that instantly put others at ease.
When I look back on fond childhood memories, he was in a lot of them. Matthew had many dear friends, and it is such a tragedy that his life was cut so short. I know that he truly touched the hearts and lives of all he met and he will never be forgotten.
My thoughts and prayers are with each of you for losing your only son, brother, soul-mate, and father. You all will be in my prayers. May God bless you all.
Best,

There are no words to express how sad I was to hear of Matthew's illness and passing. I treasured Matthew's friendship when we were in school and church together, and I considered him one of the kindest people I knew. I know many will deeply feel this loss. May you feel the comforting presence of the Lord during this very painful time. God promises that He is near to the brokenhearted, and we can stand on that truth. Please know we are praying for you who are left behind but are thankful that Matthew is completely healed in heaven.

Dear Kiel and Jordan, Sam, Janice, and Amy,
My sense of loss and my sympathy for you during this time are unfathomably deep. Losing Matthew at so early an age comes as an overwhelming shock and pain; he will be so very missed. Matthew in all his glorious uniqueness was my very oldest friend; I can't believe that I've been so fortunate as to know someone so wonderful for more than 30 years.
I'll never forget my parents telling the tale for years on end of Matthew and Christine Wormuth ordering escargot at my 2nd grade birthday party. That beautiful sense of self and good taste he possessed only improved with age. And who from high school can forget drives in the Red Tomato, or going down to Millican Falls, or evenings full of laughter hanging out at his parents’ house? I remember admiring him throughout my years growing up for his great humor and ability to love, charm, and entertain everyone he came in contact with. I remember how he knew literally everyone from every walk of life everywhere he went and how you couldn't go anywhere with him without running into people who knew him that wanted to stop and catch up. I remember being struck after not seeing him for years, how joyous and at peace with his life he seemed and how handsome he looked in his kilt at Ellen and Kyre's wedding.
That the world will no longer enjoy such grace and intelligence, such kindness and warmth, such humor and vitality is the sincerest tragedy I know. Please know that he may be gone but he will never be forgotten because his spirit lives on within us. My heart and prayers go with you all as you struggle with this unfillable void now present in your lives. Take care of yourselves.

Dear Kiel and Jordan and family,
We are so devastated by news of Matthew's death, perhaps even more because we were not able to visit Houston more recently this year.
We still remember our visit last December, we were so happy to have dinner with Kiel, Matthew, and Jordan. Jordan was an angel, and watching her dads take care of her from bath to bedtime was endearing.
We had brought her some chocolate and little gifts for Christmas. Matthew had made some "Slow Bum Jelly" and other treats that we received as gifts.
We are so happy this was our last time together, but are heartbroken to lose our friend here on earth. Matthew soars with angels and although we miss him now, we cannot wait to be reunited again. Matthew, what shall we cook when we have another party together again? It will be great. Until then, good friend, watch over us all.
Kiel and Jordan -- we will visit soon. God Bless You both.

Dear Wood and Reeves family,
I knew Matthew in junior high and high school in College Station. When I heard of his death, I thought of several memories of Matthew, but the one that made me smile the most was thinking of a crazy "drag race" we did on the way back to Consol from a lunch break during finals. I drove an eleven-year-old Buick Skylark, and Matthew, with his carload, pulled up next to our carload of finals-fried teenagers, and made some smart-aleck comment about my old junker. Hey, my car may have been old, but it could move! We took off at the light and after a neck-and-neck race, I left him behind and we made it to the parking lot with time to get out and look all casual like we had been waiting for him forever. He, of course, had the good nature to laugh at the whole thing. Matthew was a great guy and I am glad I had a chance to know him. I am thinking especially of Amy today, because I lost my sister, Janet Dromgoole, to heart disease in June 2005. Amy, I am aching for you in the loss of your brother.
All my best, and my prayers, to all of you,
Miki,Barry, and Ryan Ribbeck

As a fellow Aggie, a fellow Christian, and a fellow Palmer, Matthew was a constant inspiration for me; his absence from my "now" is only bearable by his presence in my "soon". Thank you Lord, for your gift to us called Matthew.
