Mel was one of my best friends. I first met him as professor in a National Science Foundation academic year program for 1964-1965 in which I was a participant and from which I earned my Masters Degree. He and I have been coffee drinking buddies ever since. He and Coleman Loyd Informed Frank Hubert who was the first Dean of the TAMU College of Education when it was formed in 1969 that he should consider me for the position of professor of science education for the new college when I finished my Ph.D. at The University of Wisconsin. I was appointed to that position. Mel and I led many field trips for teachers and believe the trips were important to them. In the Academic Year Honors Institutes which I directed, he assisted with the field trips to Colorado and the Grand Canyon.
When I retired from TAMU in 1999 our coffee drinking oportunities decreased in number, but since I took a position with American Airlines, Mel and I still had time together several times per year.
I was priviledged to be with Mel and Johanna on January 12 (the day which he passed on to eternity). He was no longer responsive, but I spent time visiting and praying with Mel that day, I know he heard.
When Mel and I had coffee, we talked chiefly about three issues: politics, his military service and the love of his life, Johanna. Mel loved America - he proudly served in the Army Air Force in England during the 2nd World War. He was so blessed and proud of his wife, Johanna - he was ever praising her and glad that she said "yes" to his proposal of marriage to her (a marriage of 28 years).
Mel, I miss you, and look forward to joining you again in heaven - thanks for being my friend.
