Sandra McHam Light

September 21, 1940 - June 20, 2022

Sandra "Sandie" Ann McHam Light, age 81, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 20, 2022, while surrounded by her family. Sandie was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 21,1940 to Donald and Mary Francis Wright McHam. She attended Abilene Christian University. In August of 1959, she married Emil Veon Scott and had two beautiful children, Bradley Veon McHam Scott and Terrie Lynn Scott Hood. While raising her children, she raised quarter horses in Kaufman, Texas. After moving to the Brazos Valley, she owned Wellborn Feed and Grocery.

In 1987, she was elected the first woman County Treasurer for Brazos County and served for two terms. She was then elected the first woman County Commissioner for Brazos County. While she was sitting Commissioner, then Texas Governor George W. Bush appointed her to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. In 2001, she married the love her life, Tom Light, Sr. She also spent many hours volunteering at Johnson Elementary, where her granddaughters attended school. She spent most of her time working tirelessly to help others. She never turned anyone down who needed help and would offer any and everything to those in need. She and her mother spent countless hours visiting the sick until her mom became too sick. Sandie then became the devoted lone caregiver for her mother until she passed in 2020.

Sandie is survived by her son, Bradley Scott and wife Brandy and grandchildren, Brooke and Brenna Scott; son-in-law, Joe Bridwell Hood and granddaughter, Tara Hood. She is also survived by her siblings, Meridon Warden and husband Dan, Elaine Morrison and husband Owen, Bill McHam and wife, Judy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Light, Sr.; and daughter, Terrie Hood.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sandie's honor to her chosen charity, All The World Mission or Make Kids Smile at P.O. Box 5206, Bryan, Tx 77805 or online at www.alltheworld.org/sandie

The family will observe a private memorial in Fort Worth, Texas in the future. Arrangements are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of this wonderful lady. I will never forget getting to spend time make cookies with her, playing the piano, and just visiting. Such a joy to be around, and all the love she had to share with friends and family. My thoughts and prayers are with ya'll.

Sandie encouraged and supported me in successfully running for Bryan City Council. We worked together on many projects, seeking to improve conditions for residents of B/CS. I admired her and was honored to be able to call her my friend. I will miss her. B/CS and Brazos Co. have lost a champion. My sincere condolences to her family.
