Stephen Byrne Obituary

April 15, 1953 – February 11, 2013

Stephen P. Byrne passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013 at the age of 59. He was born April 15, 1953 to Bill P. and Patricia (Seewald) Byrne in San Antonio, Texas. He received his Undergraduate in Architecture ('75), Masters in Building Construction ('77) and had recently begun his Doctoral studies at Texas A&M University.

Steve "bled maroon". He loved Aggie football and baseball and took great pride in mentoring the next generation of Aggies as a Professor in the Construction Science Department. This was his way of giving back to the industry that he loved.

Although Texas A&M was close to his heart, Steve's greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband of 41 years, loving father and grandfather. He made it a priority to be there for his family and took great pride in coaching sports for his son and attending his grandson's games. Steve was a selfless and compassionate man, always giving with a genuine heart. He was a rock for his wife, daughter and family. Steve was a man of God who lived his faith quietly. He had a way of bringing a practical approach to tough situations, which typically included a good dose of one-lined humor. Steve was loved by his family and friends, and adored by his wife, children and grandson.

Steve was Fellow and Certified Professional Constructor with the American Institute of Constructors and served as the national past-president. He also served as the Associate Executive Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction for the Texas A&M University System. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in College Station, where he was actively involved serving as chairman of the Deacons, chairman of the Finance Committee, and as an usher. He and his wife, Penny, are members of Central Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Pat Byrne.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Penny Byrne of College Station; daughter, Shawn McDaniel of The Woodlands; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Laura Byrne of Dallas; grandson, Mason McDaniel of The Woodlands; father, Bill Byrne of San Antonio; sisters, Sandi Taylor of San Antonio and Susan Byrne of Houston; a niece, Susanne Dobry of Pleasanton.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at First Baptist Church in College Station with Dr. Rodney McGlothlin officiating. Interment will follow in the Aggie Field of Honor. Visitation will be from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to, the Stephen P. Byrne '75 and Paul M. Byrne '02 Endowed Scholarship Fund, Department of Construction Science College in the College of Architecture, Texas A&M University or to the Brazos Valley Food Bank.

Steve will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Dear Penny:

As I ended my workday last week to hear the news of Steve's passing, I thought about his aspirations for Paul, the stories of Mason playing baseball, the two of you walking through the neighborhood, and your support of the University. More importantly, I remember Steve's unconditional friendship. I am still somewhat in shock and feel selfish given the obvious great husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend your family has lost. Please know that all of you are in our prayers each day and we hope to see you soon.

Penny, we are so sorry to hear of your loss.We are reminded of John 14:18, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” We know that God on the mountain, is still God in the valley. We will be praying for you and your precious family that you will feel God's sustaining presence at this very moment and be encouraged that God of the Universe cares for you and He sympathizes with you in your hour of deepest need. We are praying Isaiah 40:29 for you. “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.” God bless you. Joe & Shirley Hayman, Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin, Tx

Penny, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. Steve was a man among men, a distinguished educator, a leader and best of all a very special friend. We will always cherish the fond memories we shared at work, play and even at the church. Steve's early departure from this earth has left a big void in all of our lives and he will be greatly missed. Our prayer, to you and your family, is that the strong hands of our God will provide strength throughout these difficult times.

Steve was indeed a master constructor, builder, teacher and mentor, but to me he was a trusted and caring friend for more than 30 years. I remember especially our times with our young daughters Shawn and Melissa in our Indian Princess Tribe and our out of town trips to Rocky River Ranch in Wimberly and San Antonio. And then there is the first trip to the Big Apple with our wives Penny and Barbara. However, I will cherish most the times we shared as leaders in Young Adult Sunday School at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston. Surely, Steve's spirit is now with the Lord Jesus, who is pleased with his life well lived and which brought glory to His name. I thank God for my friend Steve!
