Steven Swaldi Obituary

April 14, 1943 - February 27, 2013

Steven E. Swaldi, age 69, passed away February 27, 2013 peacefully at his home in the company of his family. A long time resident of Bryan/College Station, Steve leaves behind many friends, family and loved-ones. He is survived by wife and best-friend for almost 50 years, Kathryn; Sons Tony (wife Laura), Michael (wife Tamara) and Garrett (wife Jane); Sister Marianne; Grandchildren Rachael, Holly, Leo, Jack, Joe, Kate, Michael, Lyla, Beatrix and Britain; and Stepmother Jean Craig. Steve is preceded in death by Parents Arthur and Georgia Swaldi, Father Paige Craig and Grandparents Charles and Lyla Astler.

Steve was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1943. He grew up and attended school in Cheyenne and Bountiful Utah. Steve graduated from the University of Wyoming where he obtained degrees in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Steve built his career mining coal and served in many capacities in the mining industry, ultimately as an executive. He worked for various companies including Consolidated Coal Co.(Illinois), Pete Kiewit (Wyoming), Gulf Interstate (Houston), and Morrison Knudsen (Boise Idaho); during his employment with MK, Steve was Vice President and General Manager of Navasota Mining Co from 1982-1996. Following the closure of Navasota Mining Co., Steve and Kathy spent three memorable years in East Germany where he served as a consultant. Upon returning home to Texas, Steve formed his own residential construction company "The Swaldi Company" in Bryan and then completed his career with Texcon Construction.

Steve was a patient, kind and loving man who was wholly devoted to his family. He lived his life with a strong sense of moral principles and integrity. Steve was an avid reader who also loved to cook (and eat). His family delighted each Christmas in his traditional Lasagna. Those who played golf with Steve were often impressed by his golf ball hunting skills; however, Steve's most brilliant moment on the golf course was his hole-in-one on March 1, 2008 at Tennison Park in Dallas. Steve sent his three sons to Texas A&M and firmly embraced The Spirit of Aggieland. He enjoyed tailgating with friends and family as well as selling programs at TAMU football games with the Lions Club. Undoubtedly, Steve was most happy when he was with his family sharing many special times together. His quick wit and patented "one-liners" kept us laughing - even on his last day.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm, March 9, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan 1100 Carter Creek Parkway Bryan, Texas 77802

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Juddi Yeh and her wonderful staff as well as Dr. David Hackathorn and the Scott & White team whose care and compassion helped ease the burden of Steve's illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the following non-profit organizations: College Station Morning Lions Club, P.O. Box 9890 College Station, Texas 77842; Hospice Brazos Valley-Bryan, 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.

I offer my most heartfelt condolences for Mr. Swaldi as I remember him to be a very caring & honest man. I was fortunate enough to know him as the Mine Manager @ Navasota Mining Co. where I spend 14-1/2 years there as an employee from 1982 - 1996. I always enjoyed the opportuities I had at the Mine to be around him because I always remember his capacity for caring for his fellow man, his wisdom, and his pleasant demeanor which was a pleasure to be around. My thoughts & prayers are with his family - Most Sincerely,
Kirtes D. Schooler
