Thomas Gayle Powell (Tom or Doc) passed away peacefully at his home in Northlake, after a brief illness on 27 August 2022.
Tom was born 18 May 1946 in Houston, TX. He was the second son of Allen Thomas (Tom) Powell and Nellie Beatrice (Bea) Taylor Powell. The family moved to College Station in 1954. Tom left A&M Consolidated High School in 1965 and joined the US Navy where he was a Hospital Corpsman.
In 1976, Tom became a Physician's Assistant and served the US around the world on Navy and Marine Corps bases as well as aboard the USS Forrestal and USS Abraham Lincoln. He retired in 1995 and returned to Texas where he ran a rural health clinic in Merkel before coming back to Bryan-College Station to work for several years at St Joseph's Hospital and Occupational Health Clinic and the prison in Huntsville. After his civilian retirement in 2013, Tom remained active in local Veterans service organizations.
Tom is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sally of Northlake, by his brothers; Richard (Sandra Prevo) of Jacksonville, FL and William (Betty Hayes) of Bryan, his children; Katharyn (Allison Holder) of Bryan, Julia (Charles Hajduk) of Stayton, OR, Christopher Barnick of Bryan, Jennifer (Rodney Adame) of Northlake, and Patricia (Juan Alvarez) of Frisco, grandchildren Aris, Charles, Thomas, Joey, Ellie, Lexie, Josie, Lia, and Evan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bea, and his brother Lee.
A memorial service will be held at the Aggie Field of Honor on 1 October 2022 at 1pm (1300) followed immediately by a reception and celebration of life at the American Legion Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to Wreaths Across America, Brazos Valley Marine Corps League, or Vietnam Veterans of America-Chapter 937.

Tom was one of my dearest friends. A comrade in arms, a fellow PA, and a personal friend. We worked together for many years. I miss him, his passing strikes very close to home.
