Herbert Cooper Obituary

CLEMSON — Dr. Herbert Press Cooper Jr., 75, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Anderson, S.C., the son of the late Sara Louise McCrary and Dr. Herbert Press Cooper, Sr. Dr. Cooper was a lifetime resident of Clemson and a 1959 graduate of Daniel High School. After graduating from Clemson University with a B.S. degree, Dr. Cooper then graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with a M.D. degree. After a one year internship at Greenville Memorial hospital, he spent over four years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps with one year in Vietnam, where he received a Bronze Star. He also spent over three years in Berchtesgaden, Germany, where he met and married his wife, Traudl.

In 1973 he returned to Clemson and served as a Family Practice physician in the Clemson and Pendleton area until his retirement in June 2015. In 2013 he was selected to be a member of the inaugural class of the D.W. Daniel Athletic Hall of Fame. He has served on the School District of Pickens Board of Trustees since 1992.

"The news of Dr. Cooper's passing is very saddening for all of us who had the pleasure to know and work with him," said Dr. Danny Merck, Pickens County School District Superintendent. "He has served on our board of trustees for 24 years, and he has left a legacy of supporting education that will have an impact on generations of students. His experience, insight, love for students, and love for his community will never be surpassed. I'm very grateful to have worked with him to build success for our students."

Dr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Traudl, and two children, Herbie and Heidi, who are both physicians and who were both valedictorians at Daniel High School; brother, Tommy Cooper of Clemson; and sister, Mary Acock of Six Mile, S.C.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Sara Louise Shigley.

A memorial service for Dr. Cooper will be held at the D.W. Daniel High School Auditorium on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2 p.m. The family will greet friends and family in the Daniel Auditorium lobby following the service.

Deepest sympathy to the entire family. He will be missed in his profession and by friends. You can't be a patient for 33 years and not feel like you lost a friend as well. My prayers are with you.

Traudl, Heidi and Herbie,
Dr. Cooper had an incredible impact on our family over the past 25 years since we came to Clemson. His care as a physician and friend have enriched our lives beyond description. I will miss seeing him walking on the dikes and having a chat about the upcoming cross country, track, basketball or football season both for Daniel and Clemson. He was a true blessing and made those around him better than they should have been. He was a man of conviction and action. His legacy will live on through those that he has touched with his gentle and compassionate demeanor. I told the Daniel cross country team this week of Dr. Cooper's passing and that he was a man that impacted many lives most of which are not aware of how he touched their lives. Please accept our deepest condolences. The celebration at Daniel High School on Saturday was uplifting and healing for those left behind Herb's wake. We will never forget Dr. Cooper and are thankful for the time we had Herb with us.

Traudl, Herbie and Heidi,
It was with great sadness that we learned of Herbert's passing. I went from Kindergarten thru graduation at Daniel with Herbert. And his property joins ours in Clemson. Though our paths have gone in different directions in the years since graduation, it was always a joy to see Herbert and his family on the rare occasions we again crossed paths.
Remember our loved ones are never truly gone, they live forever in our thoughts, in our hearts, in our memories and in our prayers. May God hol you all in the palm of his hand, is our prayer for you.

Herb and I were on the Daniel football team together when we were young. Thanks for the memories Herb. I know you remember the two a days in August 6 to 8 am and tne back at 4pm for two more hours.

You were great as a player and a supporter of Daniel and Clemson. I remember a Clemson game when it was pouring rain and my wife and I left to go to Jay and ann's and I looked back and I saw you sitting in the rain and I new you would not leave your tigers. You have not left us Herb you are with us still and we are with you.

Looking, forward to having a beer and a glass of wine with a great one in heaven and talking Daniel football. See you Herb.

Dearest Herbie, Heidi, and Traudl,

Our deepest prayers are with you guys and all of your family here with us, and those are the special prayers needed,,,ad Dr Herb is in Gods PERFECT Paradise, smiling at us and having no pain whatsoever! I vividly remember our overnights at your beautiful home while my parents went out of town. I don't remember them taking us anywhere else! I loved my German lessons after getting off the bus before Herbie and Heidi were even born. You were such a great mom, even before you had them.I am a RN now with a husband of 23 years, and 4 children. I would love to come see you soon, and please know our family has you all in our hearts. Courtney Garner Urich
PS I have written my mom, Susan a letter with the news, and I am quite sure you will be hearing from her. Iremember when I was just old enough to drive, I would go hang out at Dr Coopers office he shared with Dr Hunter...right by the drug store, where the Mexican food is now! We had fun learning and hanging out in his office reading his books and asking questions,,,I LOVED THAT and I loved DR Cooper! Rest in peace, doc(and so much more than a doc) but you know what I mean!
