Nathan H. Hirschfeld Obituary

Nathan H. Hirschfeld, 88, of New Bremen, died at 5:58 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at the Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1927, near Chickasaw in Mercer County. He was the son of Edwin and Esther (Schmidt) Hirschfeld.
On Nov. 10, 1956, he married Jeannine Sheely who died on Sept. 9, 2006.
He is survived by his children Neil Hirschfeld and Karen Fox, both of New Bremen; by his grandchildren Alex Fox and Courtney Fox and his great-granddaughter Judge Fox. Also surviving are his brothers Fred Hirschfeld of Naples, Fla., and Stanley Hirschfeld of Nobelsville, Ind.; his sister-in-law Evelyn Eymer of Bluffton, Ind., and his brother-in-law Ron Sheely of Vandalia.
Preceding him in death were his brothers Robert and James Hirschfeld and his sister Laverne Kittle.
Mr. Hirschfeld was a longtime member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 241 of New Bremen, where he served two terms as post commander and was a past member of the Celina VFW and the New Bremen Rod and Gun Club. He served on the Board of Directors for First National Bank of New Bremen.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and traveling to the western United States, Alaska and Canada in search of big game.
Mr. Hirschfeld was a general contractor, developer and builder of many homes in the New Bremen area.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Inurnment will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church.
