Tommy Lawrence Obituary

Tommy Cruise Lawrence

February 25, 1936 - May 13, 2021

Tommy Cruise Lawrence, 85, of Vinton and formerly of Hardy, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. Lawrence and Mildred Hall Lawrence, as well as siblings, Clay and James "Cotton" Lawrence.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mary Eads Lawrence, and his two daughters, Donna Whitney of Hardy, Va., and Michelle Lawrence of Reston, Va. Also surviving are his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Allie Strum (Brandon) Cash and Cole of Penhook, Va. Tom was thrilled to find out he had a great-granddaughter on the way. His other grandchildren include Sage Whitney (Aaron Jordan) of Pittsboro, N.C., and Parker Whitney of Blacksburg, Va.; his siblings, Ruth Rider and husband, Bob, of Vinton, Va., and Jack Lawrence of Draper, Va.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Lawrence of Draper, Va.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Tom was born on February 25, 1936 in Mount Airy, N.C. and grew up in Draper, Va., working on the family farm. He then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Cambria. Following his service to our country, he was employed by Western Electric (AT&T) until his retirement.

After his retirement, Tom spent most of his time caring for his wife, Mary and with his granddaughters. They spent time hanging out at the store, on the front porch, or in the garage sharing stories and teaching them life's lessons. When his great grandchildren came along, Tom enjoyed attending school functions and sporting events. They were his pride and joy. He was an avid listener of country and bluegrass and enjoyed NASCAR on Sundays. Tom never met a stranger and was a friend to all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Demott and the Carilion Hospice Team who made sure Tom was comfortable in his final moments at home where he was surrounded by family and friends. Special thanks as well to Hannah Hollins, his bonus granddaughter, for always being there and helping out as needed.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2021, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. The Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 2755 Old Baltimore Road, Draper, Va., 24324. I´m very saddened to hear of Tommy´s passing. Although I´ve only seen him a couple of times since he moved from Hardy, I considered Tommy a friend and a great guy since we first met in the 70´s. I can still remember him bringing his young daughter to Perdue´s store as he was so proud to show them off. We talked racing among many things, and I´ll always remember his smile and keen wit. My dad always thought very highly of him as well. My prayers and sincere condolences are extended to the entire family. May God be at your side and comfort you during this most difficult time.
