Barbara King Obituary

Barbara May (Paradies) King

Cedar Rapids

Barbara May (Paradies) King, 90, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at The Views of Marion. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 6 at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4-7 PM. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 7 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial: St. John's Cemetery at 1:30 PM after services.

Barb was born on December 17, 1935, in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippines, to Fred and Dora Paradies. In June 1941, shortly before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, she immigrated with her family to the United States. They first settled in Madison, WI, and later moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, in November 1944. There, Barb attended Immaculate Conception High School, graduating in 1953.

On September 11, 1954, she married Donald King Sr. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith and devotion. Barb went on to build a dedicated career at IBM, where she worked for 19 years, earning numerous awards and the respect of her colleagues. After retiring from IBM, she continued to share her talents at McLeod for 3 years, and later spent a short time with Windstream before fully embracing her final retirement.

A cherished member of Am Vets Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary, Barb was known for her deep faith and unwavering love for God, her family, and music. For over a decade, she generously shared her beautiful voice with St. Pat's Choir, always ready to add the perfect harmony. With her warm and caring spirit, Barb had a remarkable gift for making everyone she met feel like family from the very first moment.

Barb is survived by 5 of her children, Donald A. (Janice) King III, Daniel King, David (Niki) King of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Rory) Smith of Marion and Douglas (Angie) King of Kellogg; 17 grandchildren, D. Ambrose IV, Danielle, Ray "R.C.," Kacy, Jason, Kristalyn, Melanie, Kellie, Dan, Dana, Stefanie, Sarah, Joseph, Kelsey, Cassie, Morgan, and Trey; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick Sr. and Theodora Paradies; brothers Frederick Paradies, II and Frederick Paradies Jr., sister, Arline Bonar, husband, Donald King Sr., daughters, Lorraine Pate and Kathryn King-Hoffman, and granddaughter, Michelle King.

A special thanks to Suncrest Hospice and The Views of Marion for the amazing love and support they gave Barb and our family through her final moments.

I sang in St Pat's choir with Barb. Always a smile on her face! Such a classy lady with a sweet soul! She held her own with all the male tenors! We all just loved her! So sorry I cannot be there to help sing her into heaven. Eternal rest to Barb Oh Lord...

Barb was the very first person to welcome me to IBM in Cedar Rapids. Her radiant smile and positive energy made all the difference. She was so generous with her time, offering endless suggestions and guidance. We talked about our Philippine roots often. I will never forget her kindness. I will never forget how beautiful she was, inside and out. She was one in a million. It was a truly gift that we got to see her once more at the recent IBM reunion. Much love and deepest condolences to the whole family.
