Clarence Misel Obituary

Clarence "Al" Allen Misel, 88, of Marengo, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023. A memorial service for Al will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, with Rev. Anni Thorn officiating. Family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. Following the memorial service, burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Marengo American Legion Post #76. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo American Legion Post #76, or to the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, Iowa. Al and his family are in the care of Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Al is survived by his children, Sari (Raymond) Hacker of Marengo and Todd (Robin) Misel of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Kristina (Jeremy) Backes, Kaley (Chris) McElvain, Jacob (Amber) Misel and MacKenzie (Kyle) O'Shea; eight great-grandchildren, Elayna, Blakely and Ryker Backes, Adalynn and Kynlee McElvain, Cecelia and Owen O'Shea and Renna Misel; a sister, Jacqulyn Peterson, of Marengo; a sister-in-law, Donna (Dave) Kinsey; a brother-in-law, Bob (Joanne) Bell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, a brother, Don, and a nephew, Chris Misel. Clarence Allen Misel was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Marengo, the second son of the late James and Blanche (Holley) Misel. Al graduated from Marengo High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. Al was united in marriage to Betty Bell on May 14, 1955, in Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Of this union they had two children, Sari and Todd. The couple made their home in Marengo. Al was employed by Simmons Motor in Marengo for 25 years and for the city of Marengo as a street superintendent. After retiring from working for the city, Al drove motorcoaches from coast to coast and to Canada and Mexico. He drove for friends, relatives and a few celebrities. Al was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo for 66 years and was also a volunteer fireman for the Marengo Fire Department. He received the Quilt of Valor on Aug. 5, 2023, thanking him for his service and sacrifice for our country. Al was a lifelong resident of Marengo and a big part of the community. He enjoyed cruising around on his golf cart, stopping and seeing friends. Al was an avid race car fan and also enjoyed attending the races. He was a very giving, caring man and was a joy to be around. Al will be missed by many. Online condolences may be left at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.
