Dennis Hayes Obituary

Dennis Michael Hayes (73) of Monroe, LA passed away at his home on September 13, 2024. Born on February 15, 1951, to Sydney Fitzgerald in Dubuque, IA, he was soon adopted and adored by Dr. William P. and Margaret E. Hayes of Cedar Rapids. A 1969 graduate of Washington High School, Dennis had a number of careers in his life, starting as a plumber with Local 125 in Cedar Rapids. He spent ten years in the trade before attending Mt. Mercy College, graduating in 1985 with a degree in education. Dennis taught for several years before he took his classroom management skills to transit management, where he enjoyed moving to many different cities. He retired early due to health issues, subsequently living in Texas and Colorado to be near his children and grandchildren, and finally settling in Monroe, LA with his canine companions. His family notes that one always used a pencil, not a pen, to record his current address. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents William and Margaret Hayes. He is survived by his son Chris Hayes (Chanti Carpenter) and daughter Katie Pro (Jeff Pro); his sister Sue Godar (Patricia O'Connor); and four grandchildren: Emma Hayes, Aidan Pro, Brady Pro, and Charlie Pro. A small graveside memorial service will be held in his honor on November 16 at 11:30 am at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, IA. The service will be conducted by Theresa Walton. The family asks in lieu of flowers that you donate in Dennis's name to your local animal rescue.
