Gary Criddle Obituary

Every day of the last 50 years, our parents have started their day reading the obituaries in the Gazette and today you may be starting yours by reading our Dad’s. His plan was for his not to be in print for another 20 years but he was peaceful knowing that God had a different timeline. Although he wanted nothing more than to celebrate his 80th with his family on August 7, 2022, he passed from this earthly life just short of that on Wednesday, July 6 2022. Gary’s family will greet friends and family on Friday at New Covenant Bible Church from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at on Saturday at 10 a.m. at New Covenant Bible Church. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery. Teahen Funeral Home is serving Gary’s family. Throughout his brief, but valiant battle with brain cancer, he never complained nor lost his infectious optimism. A lifelong Pretzel, John Gary, was born August 7, 1942 at Freeport Memorial Hospital (Illinois) as the eldest child of Jack and Marge (McCoy) Criddle and raised on his family’s dairy farm. He loved to share memories of long days of hard work that often ended with batting practice after supper into the right field he mowed into the pasture (and thus his younger siblings had no other option than to become lefties like “the Mick). Following high school, he graduated from UW-Whitewater and then served two years in the Army during the Vietnam conflict before marrying his “Sweet Betty Lou Sorensen in 1970. They made SE Cedar Rapids their home and it has continued to be for almost 52 years. Gary and Betty daughters, Kerstin, Katie, & Karoline, were lovingly brought up on Forest Drive. The next stop was 25 years on Linden Terrace and recently relocated into the condo of their dreams. Whatever he did, whether it was mortgage banking, slow pitch softball, weekly golf groups, rotisserie baseball, church choirs, playing cards, or Handel’s Messiah, he did BIG . Family was his top priority; being a Dad and a Papa came naturally to him. He made everything an adventure, from trips to Bever Park to feeding the squirrels to any errand for which he “needed a helper. He was our biggest fan. We were all “perfect in his eyes and he never missed a chance to say, “love ya. Those grateful to have shared his life are; Betty his wife of nearly 52 years, three daughters, Kerstin (Thad) Harker of Cedar Rapids, Katie (Scott) Murray of Winfield, IL, and Karoline (Lee) Rozeboom of Cedar Rapids; his nine “perfect grandchildren, Hank and Haddie Harker, Amelia, Scotty, Mac and Sam Murray, Lulu, Teddy and Tillie Rozeboom; his mom Margery Louise Criddle of Freeport, IL; his siblings Mary Ann (Gordon) Akey, Randy (Terry) Criddle, and Dean Criddle, sister-in-law Letha (Don) Petersen, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dad, John Samuel (Jack) Criddle, in June of 2021. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.

Betty, Kerstin, Katie and Karoline and family - I am so sorry for your loss. Gary meant so much to so many people. His outlook on life and optimistic personality was infectious. Always such pleasure to be around, so funny, kind and grounding. Those PIP season warm up practices at your house and Grant Wood were some of the best days. I can still picture that smooth lefty pitching flick. It was so evident that he adored all of you. Gone sooner than anyone would wish, but he'll always be remembered so fondly by me and many. I wish I could have been there to celebrate his life and see so many wonderful old friends. Wishing you peace.

I have so many good memories of working with Gary. He always had a smile or a joke. Gary helped hundreds of first time home applicants buy their first home. A memorable event for most people. Many came back for their 2nd, 3rd and more homes. He was truly a relationship banker. I also remember playing golf with fellow "lefty". Even with the constant chatter! May the love of family and many friends carry you through your grief.

Both Sue and I are very sorry that Gary had to struggle for a few months with his disease. We are sad that he has passed on but he is with his Creator now and in no more pain. He was a very friendly man and when I chatted with him there was always a smile. He will be missed. God bless his family

I came to know Gary through his daughters. Kerstin, Katie and Karoline each possess so many of his personality traits - his kind heartedness, his humor, his easy smile and his love of life. His legacy will be carried on through them and their children. You are in my heart.

Gary Criddle- What an awesome dad! Some of my earliest memories in my life were of Mr. Criddle when my family lived on Forest Drive. I loved being around him and his family. He made everything more fun. His friendliness and positivity are two traits that made him exceptional. I miss him and am sending love to all his beautiful girls. Love, Liz

Two things I will remember "Crids" for: 1) the big tree just off the right tee on number 4 at Elmcrest we used to call "The Criddle Tree" because he hit it more than half the time. 2) when Cal Ernst, Gary and I were playing in the Mens Senior City Amateur at Jones Park, for some reason Gary called Betty on hole 11, and right in the middle of Cal´s backswing Gary said, " Hey, Cal, do you want to talk to Betty?" Of course, Cal hit an awful shot and he couldn´t believe Gary would do that, but after a couple of days we both thought it was very funny and whenever we bring up Gary´s name, we immediately say, "Hey, do you want to talk to Betty?" Gary was a good friend and our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.

We are all aware of unique individuals, but Gary was one of the best I knew. His insightful, and occasionally bizarre, statements, actions, antics, and assessments were somethings to behold.
He made us laugh.
Many of us remember that left handed golf swing, soft ball playing and coaching, and even the Canadian fishing "adventure."
The world needs more caring and thoughtful men. Just think of all the comments he would have after reading and hearing these tributes!
A good man sorely missed by his Family and Friends. Peace, Fred

It was my privilege to know and appreciate Gary in many school activities. He was always a positive presence at any event. I knew him in many different roles but always appreciated what he had to offer. His smile always preceded him. I join with the family in celebrating his life. We are all better because he was here.

Sending heartfelt condolences to Betty, the girls, and family. I have such fond memories of working with Gary so many years ago. He made the workplace such a fun place!! I remember playing catch out in the parking lot during lunch breaks and practicing our putting on the carpet in the lobby!! I appreciated his wonderful sense of humor and he truly was a joy to work with. It always brings a smile to my face when I think of Gary. What a legacy his life has been with the love and caring he had for his family and friends and his devotion to Christ and Church. May God bless you all with the beautiful memories you share with Gary and Peace in knowing he is with his Savior.
