Johannes Ledolter Obituary

Johannes Ledolter, University of Iowa professor and Vienna Economic University emeritus professor, died on November 5, 2023, after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. Johannes chose to study statistics at the University of Vienna when the field was in its infancy. He came to America on a Fulbright Scholarship to study with George Box and George Tiao who were giants in the field. For many, statistics seems dull, but Johannes explored the world through the lens of applied statistics. Johannes was a skilled skier and bicyclist, a worker in wood, and preparer of paella for the neighborhood block party, but most of all he was a devoted friend. He is survived by Lea VanderVelde, his life partner of 50 years, son Thomas of San Francisco, son Jeffrey of Iowa City, and his mother Herta in Austria. The family is hosting a memorial afternoon tea at Hancher Café, 3:30 -6:00 November 15. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Iowa ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights, or Blue Marine Foundation. Please note that the contribution is in memory of Johannes Ledolter. Links to the organizations may be found on Johannes' obituary page at www.lensingfuneral.com

Dear Lea, Thomas and Jeffrey,
it was sad to hear those news. I will never forget how Hannes helped me during my stay in Iowa in the nineties and the many fruitful discussions I've had with him thereafter. He was a fine man and a great colleague, who will be remembered.
