Lee McCombs Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lee Ann (Powell) McCombs, a devoted mother, beloved grandmother, a passionate teacher, and a cherished daughter and friend who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 surrounded by her loving children, at the age of 72 in Tallahassee, Florida. Born on March 8, 1953, Lee Ann Powell was the daughter of Harry G. and Helen Ann (Dvorak) Powell of Troy Mills, Iowa. As a lifelong learner, she earned an education degree from Northeast Missouri State College and became a teacher. Over her career, she shared her gifts as an educator, inspiring students with her intelligence and appreciation for literature. Her love of literature came alive in the classroom, she often taught her students how to dance the Charleston while reading the Great Gatsby, bringing history and storytelling to life with joy and flair. Lee Ann married Glen Ehlinger in 1975 and later divorced. Their marriage welcomed two children, Elijah Powell and Katy Lee. As a devoted mother, Lee Ann loved her children deeply and found her greatest joy in being their mom. She approached motherhood with dedication, determination, and a fearless sense of adventure. Lee Ann was also a proud and loving grandmother, affectionately known as Nannie to her grandchildren. Whether reading stories, planning adventures, or simply being present with them, she shared her playful spirit, sharp wit, and devotion. She was also incredibly smart, sharp, curious, and insightful, with a deep appreciation for learning, culture, and the world around her. She loved to travel and experience the unexpected. One of her favorite places was Morocco, where she was captivated by the sight of goats perched in argan trees - a perfect symbol of her delight in life's surprises. Lee Ann is survived by her father, Harry, sister Debbie (Mike) Cady, son Elijah, daughter Katy (Mitch) Fenton, grandchildren Adrian and Asher Ehlinger, Baylor, Emery, and Easton Fenton. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Powell. A small family gathering will take place at a later date to celebrate Lee Ann's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
