Phillip Nussbaum Obituary

PHILLIP NUSSBAUM Iowa City Phillip Nussbaum, 67, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly at home May 15, 2021. To celebrate his life and memory, a memorial gathering for Phil's family and friends will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, where a brief memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Instead of flowers and plants, the family requests that memorial donations be directed to his wife Martha to be placed in an educational fund that has been established for his daughter Kathryn. Phillip was born March 20, 1954, in Des Moines, to parents Glen C. Nussbaum and Frances G. (Winchell) Nussbaum. He and his family moved to Iowa City, Iowa in 1960 where he graduated from Iowa City High School in 1972. After training as an architectural draftsman, Phil later went on to pursue his dream of becoming a registered architect. After working for several small firms, he established his career with Hansen Lind and Meyer in 1983 and shortly after married Martha Christensen in October of 1983. His career led the two to make multiple moves within the United States, most recently Cheyenne, Wyo., and Madison, Wis. Eventually they returned to Iowa City with their young daughter in 2009 for his employment in a management role with Heery International (previously Hansen Lind and Meyer). While at Heery International, he worked on the Stead Family Children's Hospital at the University of Iowa Hospital among other notable projects. A gentle soul with a strong work ethic, Phil was always ready to lend a hand to co-workers, friends, and neighbors. He had a variety of interests throughout his life, a love for the old west and John Wayne, fishing, music, home renovations, woodworking, Corvettes and his dogs. He is survived by his mother, Frances G Nussbaum; wife, Martha (Christensen) Nussbaum; daughter, Kathryn Nussbaum; sister-in-law, Therese Nussbaum; niece, Elaine Nussbaum; nephew, John Nussbaum; and many extended family members throughout the U.S. Phil was predeceased by his father, Glenn Nussbaum; and brother, Michael Nussbaum. Online condolences and memories of Phil can be shared with his family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
