Stanley Cooper Obituary

STANLEY BARTON COOPER Monticello Stanley Barton Cooper, of Monticello, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away suddenly on Oct. 23, 2018, at the age of 64. Stan was born on March 9, 1954, to Norman and Rebecca Cooper in San Diego, Calif., where his father had been serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. After the war, his parents moved to Des Moines, where Stan was raised. A graduate of Hoover High School, he attended the University of Northern Iowa and settled in Cedar Rapids, where he began his career as a carpenter. A proud member of Carpenters Union Local 308, Stan was the apprenticeship coordinator for many years, teaching countless students the art of carpentry. He took great satisfaction in seeing his students become safe and skilled tradespeople. An avid Cardinals fan, Stan enjoyed attending the team's spring training in recent years while spending winters in Gulf Shores, Ala. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, hunting each fall, following Xavier High School softball and visiting with people wherever he went, always quick with a hearty laugh and story to tell. Stan is survived by his daughters, Andrea, Renae (Bryan) Petersen and Jill; their mother, Jean (Kedley) Cooper; and his sister, Karen (Trace) McDermott, all of the Cedar Rapids area. He also is survived by extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman L. and Rebecca F. Cooper. A celebration of Stan's life and a luncheon will be held at Five Rivers Carpenter JATC building in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Graveside services will be held in Puxico, Mo., at a later date. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family. Instead of flowers and/or gifts, memorial donations may be directed to Stan's daughters, who will distribute them to Indian Creek Nature Center and Animal Welfare Friends of Monticello. Online condolences can be left at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.

Tears are streaming down my cheeks. No one would ever know how this man hasnt impacted my life. Always a smile, always encouraging me and pushing me to be a better version of myself. I knew something was wrong the minute I didnt get a call or text back. I scoured the internet and This is where I found you. I love you to the moon and back. May light perpetually fall on you. My heart goes out to his family. Especially his daughters whom he spoke highly of.

Stan was a good friend and played a key role in enabling the Indian Creek Nature Center to welcome more children. He was a consummate teacher of the apprentices he mentored. Stan never minced words and his candor helped many young people move forward in their lives and careers. He was the best of mentors. Rich Patterson

We are very sorry to lose our friend Neighbor Stan. We will miss our visits to the "oasis" where there was always a cup of coffee and good conversation for me and a cool concrete floor, a fresh bowl of water, and dog biscuits for Stan's furry friend Jenni. Go with love and rest in peace, Stan.

I shared my thoughts regarding Stan with other family members the other night but would like also to have them included here. Id also like to remember Stans athletic potential which was cut short by the 1st of many life changing events that Stan experienced. He was great at basketball and baseball but football was his sport. He played both ways on our team because he was the best player on the field. He played sports with a tenacity which he carried later in life when the additional life changing events hit. Lessons from Stan: stick up for those love, dont be afraid to say what you think, and learn to live with what life dishes out. Hes missed.

I'll always remember Stan enjoying the sun, the game and the people

So very sorry to hear this news. Prayers for peace and comfort to you all. Stanley was one of the first people I met when I joined 308 and he was always there with advice and help when I needed it. He touched so many young carpenters. RIP my Brother, you will be missed but your contributions to Local 308 will never be forgotten. Thank you my friend until we meet again!!
