James G. Barry, age 86, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2021 at The Cottages in New Lenox.
James is survived by his children; Carla Barry, James (Wendy) Barry, Thomas (Christina) Barry, and Edward (Andria) Barry; his grandchildren, Matthew Barry, Jessica Barry, Ryan Barry, Colin Barry, Alexander (Kristin) Barry, and Samantha Barry; sister Nancy (Robert) Lasser; sister-in-law Rita Barry; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years Carol Barry; his parents, William and Jeanette Barry; granddaughter Elizabeth Barry; and his brother William Barry.
James was born in Joliet, IL in 1934. Upon graduation from high school, James enlisted into the Army and proudly served our country. It was here that he discovered a great passion that he would carry for the rest of his life. This passion was running. This passion ended up taking him all over the world. Eventually he ran either marathons or half marathons on every continent in the world including the first ever marathon in Antartica. He was also a teacher of mathematics at Prairie State University for over 40 years. James was a loving man and will be missed by all that knew him.
Services for James will begin on Friday, October 8th, with a visitation from 3pm-8pm at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, at 102 E. Francis Rd in New Lenox, IL. There will be another brief visitation the following day, October 9th, beginning at 10am until the time of the funeral service at 11am. James will be laid to rest with his wife at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Morris. MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE REQUIRED AT THE FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the Great Joliet Area YMCA or Joliet Township High School Foundation in James's name would be appreciated.
