Marlene W. Stubler, age 90, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2025 at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL. Born on April 14, 1935, in Joliet, Illinois, Marlene was a beacon of professionalism, dedication, and service throughout her life, leaving a profound impact on journalism, public relations, and community service across her beloved hometown and beyond.
A proud graduate of Joliet Township High School in 1953, Marlene was a lifelong scholar, always striving for excellence. She earned her associate degree from Joliet Junior College in 1976 and went on to graduate magna cum laude in 1979 from the College of St. Francis with a double major in Journalism/Communications and Law & Government. Her academic achievements were recognized by her induction into Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Catholic Scholastic Honor Society, and her inclusion in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges during 1978–1979.
Professionally, Marlene's mark on local journalism is both enduring and inspiring. As an editor and reporter for the Joliet Herald News for 18 years, she brought compelling stories to light with depth and compassion. Her talent was recognized with multiple Copley Journalism Awards, including Best Feature Story in 1962, 1970, and 1971, and Best Spot News Story in 1974. That same year, she received the Medical Journalism Award from the Illinois State Medical Society for her impactful series on cancer-further highlighting her commitment to informing and educating the public through her writing.
Marlene later transitioned into public relations, culminating in her recognition as the National Communicator of the Year in 1992 by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations during her tenure at the College of DuPage. Her influence reached far beyond her profession, as she served with distinction on the Board of Directors of the Trailways Council, Girl Scouts of America, and played key roles within the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and the Will County Public Relations Society, where she also took up the mantle of historian.
Marlene is survived her sister-in-law, Wally (Werner) Zoglauer; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard D. Stubler; her parents; and siblings, Donald (the late Helen) Wirth, Sr., Robert "Red" (the late Betty) Wirth, Helen (the late Mario) Pozzi, and Herman "Jimmy" Wirth.
The family would like to say thank you to the entire staff of Eden Vista for all the love and care they showed to Marlene as well as Lightways Hospice.
Funeral Services for Marlene W. Stubler were held privately by her family, and as it was her request, cremation rites have been accorded. Interment was held privately by the family at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville. In remembrance, may we celebrate her extraordinary journey-a life guided by vision, intellect, and a steadfast commitment to community and communication.
