Avgoula Kovlakas Obituary

Avgoula Kovlakas
Resident of Norwalk
Avgoula Kovlakas, 76, of Norwalk CT, passed away in her home on May 4, 2014 while surrounded by loving family, who will all miss her dearly.
Avgoula was predeceased by her beloved husband Aristides Kovlakas, her parents Paul and Maria Kosmides, and her grandson Aristides Tsingerliotis. She is also predeceased by her brother-in-law George Kovlakas, and her sister-in-law Eleni Zlatidou.
She is survived by her three children and their families; daughter Rita Tsingerliotis and her husband George of Norwalk CT, whom she loved as her son, her grandson Anthony Tsingerliotis and his wife Josette of Trumbull CT, great-grand daughters Georgie and Avery, and her grandson Angelo Tsingerliotis of Norwalk CT; her son Paul Kovlakas and his wife Lisa of Milford CT, along with their three children, her granddaughters Alexa Avgi, Ariel and Ava; and her son Anastasios (Andy) Kovlakas and his wife Kara of Trumbull CT, along with their daughter, her granddaughter Aydan. Avgoula is also survived by her brother Michael Kosmides and his wife Vickie of Brownstown Township MI and their sons Paul (and his wife Alicia), George and John; her brother James Kosmides and his wife Angela of Sterling Heights MI, their children and their families Mary Tangalos (and her husband John) and Paul Kosmides (and his wife Tara); her sister-in-law Paraskevi Kovlakas and her children and their families Evripides (Pete), Savvas (Steve), Mersina Liaskas and Haroula (Carol) Papadopoulos; her nieces Haritsa Tsamis and Dina Filippis and their families, and nephew Kostas Zlatoudis and his family. She is also survived by many cherished grandnieces and grandnephews, extended family and countless friends.
Born in Florina, Greece, Avgoula married Aristides Kovlakas in 1957 and came to the United States in 1963 by boat while almost 9 months pregnant, with her husband and 4 year-old daughter Rita, settling in Detroit MI before moving with her family to Norwalk CT in 1975. She was employed and skilled as a seamstress, before dedicating her life to taking care of her family as a homemaker. An avid gardener, she couldn't be kept from harvesting vegetables amongst the rows in her backyard garden, even as her health waned. Family, friends, their coworkers and classmates were always welcome in her home, where impromptu hearty meals broke out whenever someone stopped by for a visit. Simple pleasures are what she enjoyed, where above all else family was most important. Her home was your home.
Her simple smile was a joy, even in the face of her declining health in recent years. A crocheter of blankets, throws, scarves and slippers, we'll be reminded of her warmth and how comfortable she made us feel for many years to come. She could make creative use of the English language. Her spanakopita was legendary. Friends became family.
Friends may call Tuesday, May 6th, from 5PM to 8PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 7th, at 10:00AM in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 238 West Rocks Road, Norwalk. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Avgoula's memory may be made by check to the Ari Tsingerliotis Scholarship Fund, and mailed to Norwalk High School, Attn: Chris Laughton, 55 County St, Norwalk CT 06851.
