Celeste Buccino Obituary

Celeste Totaro Buccino, age 85, died June 5, 2011, peacefully at her home in New Canaan. A lifelong New Canaan resident, Celeste was born on Raymond St., March 3, 1926 and was the only daughter of the late Pasquale and Josephine D'Arinzo Totaro.

Many of her childhood days were spent at “Totaro's Market”, her parents store on Elm Street, where she later worked. Her father opened the store in 1922 and it became a local landmark, selling fine foods, meats, vegetables, Josephine's homemade mayonnaise, exotic fruits, and imported delicacies from all over the world. For 57 years, many New Canaanites stopped into the market for a lunch sandwich and enjoyed eating in “the back”. Celeste also worked in her brother Mark's liquor store, “Totaro's Liquor”, the first liquor store in New Canaan, also located on Elm Street, where many locals would gather for conversation and laughs. There are “old timers and some not so old, who still reminisce about the good food, good conversation, good people and fond memories of both stores.

Celeste was always on the go, dressed in bright colors from head to foot, with bright lipstick and big bold earrings perfectly matched her outfit and never a hair out of place. Always very active in the community, she was a member of the Sons of Italy and spent many Tuesday nights volunteering at Bingo. She was also on the board of directors of the Senior Center of New Canaan, where she had served as a long-time volunteer and had many fans there.

Those who knew Celeste, recall her vibrant personality, sense of humor and unmistakable voice. No one was ever quite sure what she would say next. She enjoyed shopping at Shop Rite and would “hold court” so to speak as she went down the aisles and spent time talking with many friends she made there. On Sunday mornings, she would be at The Food Emporium, shopping and chatting with friends she encountered. Warm and outgoing, Celeste still kept in touch with friends from her childhood in New Canaan. Those of us who were closest to her share great memories of big holiday dinners with the family all together, the house fragrant with the aromas of a great home-cooked meal, and the table laden with beautifully decorated cakes and delicious pies she made. Celeste as a great mom and gave her family a great life.

Celeste was the wife of the late Frank Buccino, a well known building contractor, of Carlo Buccino and Sons, who built St. Aloysius and the Mormon Church in New Canaan, along with the family home in New Canaan. She is survived by her two daughters, Celeste A. Buccino of New Canaan and Marguerite Tamez Buccino of Dallas, TX, Marguerite's husband, Alfredo Tamez and their children, Bianca and Paolo Tamez-Buccino, a brother, Patsy Totaro, Jr. and wife Carmela Totaro of New Canaan, a sister-in law, Anna Totaro, of New Canaan and many nieces and nephews. Her brother Mark Totaro predeceased her.

Services and interment will be private.

As a close childhood friend of Celeste's daughter, Celeste A. (this is going back to the mid-late 60's to mid 70's), I wish to express my most sincere condolences - as belated as they may be - to your entire family. I have fond memories of "Mama Celeste". She was a gracious, cheerful, funny & generous woman (&, of course, a wonderful cook - I delighted in her meals & delicacies that she would 'whip up' & "insist that I try it"!), and was always impeccably dressed from head to toe w/ all of her matching accessories (which fascinated me). As a child, we used to play at the family's homes (in both Norwalk, & New Canaan). Celeste & Marguerite - you may not even remember me after all these years, but I do think of you, and have wanted to try to find you for years. My Mother just today reminded me of our friendship "way-back-when", which inspired me to again try to find you. Via the internet is how I learned of your Mom's passing (your Dad, too). I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad in 2013. I wish you peace and Celeste A. I would truly enjoy reconnecting with you after all these years. May you & your entire family be blessed with good health and happiness. Most sincerely, Andrea (AKA "Anne") Sass, formerly of Norwalk & Wilton now in FL for over 30 yrs.

Dearest mother in law. You were very special. Like the obituary aptly says you were a character and were quite unique. We shall miss you greatly. You never knew how grateful I have always been for bringing Marguerite into the world. You scolded me often for how I brewed my tea, but you always had kind words for me about me as a father and you showed great love for your grandchildren. My kids will miss you always. They fondly talk about you and how you bought them old bread to feed the woodchucks off your deck. It was always the highlight of the children's summer to visit you in New Canaan. I shall miss visiting you and having the usual breakfast of toasted crumpets, wild berry spread, OJ and your strong coffee. May you rest in peace and may the love of the Lord embrace you in heaven.

Your favorite son in law,
Alfredo

Two other great things about our mother is that she instilled a great sense of how wonderful it is to be an American and she also gave us a love of beauty.

Mama B, I will miss you very much, the sound of your voice and that amazing and outrageous personality, no one ever knew what you were going to say and to who. Right up to the end of your wonderful life you were witty and on the ball. I know that your daughter will miss you ever so much, but always remember you brought her up to be a wonderful woman and she will carry on all you have taught her. And she was proud to be your little Doll. Missing you forever. Now you can enjoy freedom and all of your loved ones who have passed before you. Rest in Peace. Love always and forever Lisa oooxxx
