Charles Zarowin Obituary

Charles B. Zarowin
“Charlie”
Charles B. “Charlie” Zarowin, aged 80, died at home in Venice, FL on July 8, 2013, after a nearly year-long battle with cancer and resulting illnesses. Charles lived for most of his adult life in Rowayton, Westport, and Fairfield, Connecticut, with his wife of 46 years, Nancy Gordon Zarowin. After more than a decade of dividing their time between Fairfield and Venice, they recently made the decision to make Venice their retirement home.
Charlie was a scientist from a young age, attending Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Polytechnic, where he earned his B.S. and M.S. in Physics, and Fordham University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Physics and taught. He worked all his life in industrial physics at IBM's Watson Research Laboratory, Perkin-Elmer, and Hughes Research/Boeing, Malibu, from which he retired in 1998. He received numerous patent awards in lasers and optics over the course of his professional life and made important contributions to plasma physics as applied to semi-conductor processing and optics fabrication.
Charlie's other passions included traveling with his wife to Europe, sailing his sloop, Impatience, playing the flute and recorder, listening to classical music, and conversing with friends over a good meal with wine.
Charles Zarowin is survived by his wife, Nancy Zarowin; his brother, Stanley Zarowin; his sons from his first marriage, Marc, David and Claude Zarowin; and their four children, Jenny, Sara, Erika and Elissa Zarowin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, 1700 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL, 34239, where Charles received all the care possible to keep him alive, or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL, 34238, which helped Charlie to die peacefully.
