Jesus Yap Obituary

Jesus F. Yap, Jr. MD
Dr. Jesus F. Yap, Jr., of Norwalk, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 with his loving family at his side. Born in the Philippines on May 21, 1944 and educated at the prestigious University of the Philippines, Dr. Yap immigrated to the US in 1968 to continue his medical training in Albany, NY where he met his future wife, Nancy Louise Moore. Dr. Yap was board certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology and held appointments at prominent medical institutions including Columbia University, NY Medical College, Norwalk Hospital and Stamford Hospital. From 1976, he served as Chief of Cardiology at St. Joseph's Medical Center (now Stamford Medical Center) and head of the Heart Institute for over 20 years as well as Chief of Medical Staff (1997/1998). He was a senior partner with Cardiology Associates, now Cardiology Physicians of Fairfield County. Throughout his career, Dr. Yap was a tireless innovator; he conducted the first pacemaker operation in Stamford as well as the city's first balloon angioplasty. He was a passionate and tireless healer who provided his patients with outstanding care and compassion, as well as the occasional dose of humor. When asked by a nervous patient if he was a religious man, Dr. Jesus Yap pointed to his first name on his badge and replied, "Don't worry, you're talking to the top guy!" His love for his craft fueled his dedication to sharing his knowledge with his colleagues and community through regular lectures and publications and he continued to teach well after his retirement in 2012. Dr. Yap had an almost insatiable intellectual curiosity and loved to engage in spirited debate with his colleagues at the Prometheum and the State Street Debating Society in Stamford. He was an enthusiastic golfer and devout parishioner at St. Jerome's church in Norwalk. His greatest source of pride and entertainment were his grandchildren whom he indulged with candy and TV at every opportunity. In addition to his wife, Nancy, Dr. Yap is survived by his brothers, Romulo Yap and Roje Yap; his sisters, Jane Duka and Jennie Chan; daughter, Rosalina Yap Thomas and son-in-law, Justin Thomas; his son, Robert Yap and daughter-in-law, Son-Mi Lee; his son Stephen Yap and daughter-in-law Abbi Yap; as well as his grandchildren, Campbell Thomas, Reed Thomas, Logan Yap and Devon Yap. He was predeceased by his father, Jesus N. Yap; his mother, Rosalina Fulay Yap and his brother, Rolando Yap. Visitation will be held from 3-8 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2017at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home (next to the Knights of Columbus) 453 Shippan Ave Stamford, CT (203)-359-9999. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on November 10, 2017 at St. Jerome's Roman Catholic Church 23 Half Mile Rd, Norwalk, CT . In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in his honor to the Love for Life Foundation in support of medical missions to rural villages in the Philippines at www.theloveforlife.org or to St. Jerome's church at http://www.stjeromenorwalk.org/. I still talk about how Dr. Yap used to meet my father (Jack Gross) at the elevator for his appointments. He was very good to my dad. They had a beautiful Dr. patient relationship and an even better friendship. Never forgotten always remembered.

I can still see Dr. Yap's smile as he came bustling down the hallway. He always had a kind word and smile that went from here to the moon and back. I know you're still smiling down on us and we miss you, Dr. Yap.

Remembering Dr. Yap who was not only a wonderful doctor but a wonderful person who really cared about people and always went the extra mile to try and help others.

December 28, 2017

My first memory of Dr. Yap was the generosity given to me by him and his lovely wife. I left my home in Virginia after college and moved to Stamford for employment. When they heard I was struggling to find housing they offered their house to me at no cost for MORE THAN A MONTH. At the time I was a distant friend (at best) to the Yap family yet Jesus and Nancy treated me like one of their family. I went from living in a motel to Dr. Yap walking me into his immaculate study and offering his desk to me for my studies. Amazing hospitality.

His quips were absolutely the best. He had a clever way of poking fun at you, yet you felt like laughing right along with him because it was so friendly. In fact, my last memory of him was watching the summer Olympics and him guessing the winners before the event had started. I forget exactly why but even this simple interaction was comical to me.

Many people (myself included) gravitated toward him during parties because he always exuded liveliness. He was a magnet for goodwill and laughter. His passion for people and his family was abundantly clear as was his passion for life in general. While I will miss him, I can say with confidence that his legacy lives on through his family - they are an incredible bunch.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dr. Yap passing away, I've known him for so many years, he was my late mom's doctor and mine. Dr. Yap was not only such a brilliant, and wonderful doctor but he was also a good, kind Godly person, he was more than just a doctor he was a friend and he always went the extra mile to do his best to help others. I believe he is at peace with our Lord Jesus Christ, Dr. Yap was also a man of faith which not only explains his God gifted talent of being a wonderful doctor but also such an overall wonderful human being who will be missed my many. Grace and peace to Dr. Yap's family.

While I never met Dr. Yap, he felt like a member of our family...someone who looked over my father's health for many, many years. If not for his kindness, compassion and skill, I don't know if my family would have had the quality of life with our dad that we so enjoyed. My parents had nothing but the best to say about him, and believed he was truly a special individual. Please know that he is living through all of us that he impacted, directly and in my case, indirectly. The world is a better place because of individuals like him. God bless.

To the Yap family:
I was so saddened to see the obituary for Jesus in the paper. For years my husband John "Jack" Gross was a patient of Dr. Yaps. Dr. Yap became part of our family. We loved him dearly because we knew in our heart of hearts Jack's longevity in life was due to Dr. Yaps commitment to his health. Dr. Yap always met my Jack at the elevator waiting for him with that big smile. That is what we would call the special treatment - he loved my Jack. They would discuss sports and Jack really enjoyed actually having an appointment with Dr. Yap. On the day that my husband passed Dr. Yap was there in his usual kind way to comfort me. He will be missed but never forgotten by myself and our family.

November 10, 2017

Our deepest condolence for the loss of our dear loving friend- Jess. We will always cherish the memories of his life well lived.

Karen Stadtmiller

November 9, 2017

My name is Karen. My father, Henry Stadtmiller was the patient Dr Yap performed the first balloon angioplasty on, mentioned in his obituary. Because of him my father was able to walk me down the aisle at my wedding and see the birth of his grandson. Because of his kindness and skill he changed my life immeasurably. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Yap family. What an amazing and wonderful man. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Yap.

Dear Mrs. Yap and Family, I was in total shock when I was told the upsetting news of our wonderful, one of kind, human being family doctor and member's passing of my family !!! It was sudden and cried hysterically.

I had been calling your home to speak with him or you (if he was unable to) to get your mailing address to send him My heartfelt thanks for honoring me with his presence in coming to my mother's wake on July 20th if you recall. Her name Tasia Patras.

He was my father's doctor and good friend and continued being my mother's and watching over her with such care, concern and mutual respect. Indeed, he was the BEST IN ALL THAT HE WAS, HE DID AND STOOD FOR !!!

I will miss him so much but I know that Dr. Yap's spirit is alive and will always be with us. Take comfort in that. He left a tremendous legacy behind that not too many can say. Celebrate his memory.

May he Rest In Peace. Eternal be his memory. May you and your family always be in good health to remember him by.

God bless
With All My Love & Condolences

To the Family of Dr.Jesus Yap-
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn the loss of a great and gifted physician. Dr.Yap became my husband's cardiologist at St. Joseph's Medical Center and served him with excellent care until his retirement. My husband passed away in Sept, but I'm sure he wouldn't have been here that long had it not been for the amazing care of Dr.Yap whom he dearly loved. They shared many jokes and had many laughs over the years. Rest in Peace Dr.Yap,you will be missed.

Dr. Yap was by far THE Best Cardiologist Ever. I worked with him at St. Joseph's Hospital back in 1976-77. He was so smart, kind and wonderful with patients and staff. ...and an excellent teacher and role model.I remember asking him what the best part of his limited time off was and he replied the Sunday mornings when his children would jump in bed with him. He was surely an angel walking this world disguised as a human. G-d rest your beautiful Soul and comfort your Family.
