John Kearney Obituary

John Patrick Kearney, formerly of Greenwich, CT, died in Columbus, NC on Saturday, June 13, 2009. He was 93 years old.

He was born in New York City on November 15, 1915, son of John Thomas Kearney and Ursula Agatha “Ella” McLevedge. He was a Navy Lieutenant assigned to Washington, DC. He married the love of his life, Margaret Edna Coward in 1943 in Georgetown, at Holy Trinity Church, Washington, DC. At the time it was the first inter-service marriage between a Coast Guard Officer and a Navy Officer. His wife predeceased him in 2003.

Jack graduated from Fordham University in 1936 and studied at Pratt Institute. After leaving the Navy in 1946 he went to work for Owens-Illinois in Toledo, OH. He was Vice President and General Manager of the Libbey Division and Industrial and Electronics Division. While with the Electronics Division of OI, he introduced the first rectangular TV bulb to the market in 1948. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, American Ceramics Society, and was Chairman of the American Glassware Assoc in the 70's. He was Vice President of Brockway Glass Company. He was recruited by Continental Can Company to head their Consumer Products Division in New York City. When he retired from there, President Carter asked him to become the Ombudsman for Business in the Department of Commerce, a position he held for five years. Later he became a Generalist in the business consulting field before retirement. He finally retired to Hilton Head Island, SC. In June, 1992, he and his wife moved to Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC

He is survived by children, Margaret Burton and her husband Roy of Perkinsville, VT; David Kearney and his wife Lois of Bantam, CT; Martha K Scully and her husband Dennis of Norwalk, CT. Grandchildren: John Vogel (Andrea) from Riga, MI; Jennifer Russ (Dana) from Canton, GA; Robert Kearney, Jr. from New York City; Justin Timko (Sebrena) from New York, Samantha McGarry Garcia (Luis) from Barcelona, Spain , Sunita Timko and her son, Oliver, from Perkinsville, VT, Justin Kearney and Leanna Kearney from West Haven, CT, Matthew Scully, Kate Scully and her daughter, Isabella Cocchia and Patrick Scully all from Norwalk, CT He was also predeceased by two sons, Peter Kearney and Robert Kearney.
