Margaret Claps Obituary
Margaret Eula Claps
Formerly of Norwalk
Margaret “Marge” Eula Claps, age 94, passed away on March 1 after a brief illness. Born in 1919 in Norwalk, CT to Domenick and Lena Eula, Margaret lost her father at a young age and became responsible for three younger brothers while her mother worked. Upon graduation from high school, she worked to help support the family, first in her hometown of Norwalk and later in Manhattan as a secretary for Nestle Corporation. She put her brothers through school and all three served in the armed forces in W.W.II. One brother, Joseph Eula, an internationally acclaimed artist and fashion illustrator and W.W.II hero, was inducted in the Norwalk Wall of Honor.
Margaret married Ludovic Vincent Claps in 1940, who was then interning in medicine in New York City. He obtained a position at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, CT where he practiced OB-GYN for the next three decades. In the 1940s they vacationed on Sea Island for the first time, and that began a tradition of several golfing vacations there each year and a vacation home purchased in the 1960s. Upon retirement, Marge and “Vince” relocated permanently to Sea Island where she became active in the ladies golfing association and he held positions with the homeowners' association and men's golfing groups. She was also an active hospital volunteer, and both of them served as Eucharistic ministers at St. William's Catholic Church.
Marge is survived by a son, Nick, living in Ignacio, Colorado, and daughter, Lee Hiers Owen (Cannon) of St. Simons Island, and one surviving brother, Anthony Eula of Norwalk. She was pre-deceased by her husband and by a son, Peter Michael Claps. Her extended family includes three grandsons Christopher Claps of Ignacio, CO, Matthew Claps of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Clayton Hiers of Alpharetta, GA, and four great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at St. William's Catholic Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Benedetto Fund at the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation, 1626 Frederica Road, Suite 201, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
