Mary DiScala Obituary

Mary Tortorella DiScala
Mary Tortorella DiScala, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home at the age of 102 on January 27, 2023.
Mary is survived by her two beloved children, Michael F. DiScala and wife, Donna, her daughter, Lucia DiScala Breault and husband, Joseph D. Breault, and former daughter-in-law Michele Alberta DiScala all of Norwalk. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Portia Antonio, John DiScala, Natalie Grillo, Jaclyn DiScala, and Michael DiScala, Jr. and three step-grandchildren Nora Breault, Lauren Ambrogio, and Joseph V. Breault. In addition, Mary leaves behind her six great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will hold her dear in their hearts always.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Gioacchino "Jack" DiScala, her brother, Sam Tortorella, and her loving parents, Lucy and Salvatore Tortorella.
Few people can say this, and Mary was proud of the fact that she was a lifelong Norwalk resident. Mary graduated in February 1938 from the first graduating class at Norwalk High School and later attended Merrell's Business School. She worked at the C&K Hat Corporation before starting a family. Mary was the support system behind her family's entrepreneurial real estate endeavors and was an integral part in building the company into what it is today. She was so proud of the mark that M.F. DiScala & Company has made in helping to change the landscape of Norwalk, a city which she loved, and which she called home for over 102 years. Most important to Mary, however, was her family and vast circle of wonderful and close friends.
Mary exuded a true sense of style, a spirit of warmth and eternal optimism. She was generous beyond measure. She gave an abundance of love, compassion, and advice, not only to family and friends, but to everyone in need. She was truly one of God's masterpieces. We take comfort in knowing that Mary's legacy will live on through the lives she touched. She will be forever missed and never forgotten.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Matthew Church or a charity of your choice.

Mary's mother had five miscarriages before she was born. "I think I came by a miracle," she told me in 2001.And here she has lived for 102 years. Amazing. She loved music and she loved to dance. She envisioned a career as a dancer or even an actress. Instead, she became a devoted wife and mother and through her steady love and support enabled other so pursue their dreams

My life was enriched by having my Aunt Mary! For the last couple of years we spoke regularly she was number one on my list of "Get Happier call" ! She embodied positivity no matter how she may have been feeling she was encouraging and lifted my spirits if I were down! Time and time again she´d repeat her mantra "count your blessings Joey" something she repeated to herself regularly. Because of our close family and the age my parents were when I was conceived Aunt Mary was one of my "Mother´s" my life was better for having her, she was the only American in our family although immigrants we were all patriotic but only Aunt Mary had an American perspective and no one was more encouraging than her. She single handily got me to dance which I´m eternally grateful for still another happier mechanism I´ll miss you forever Love Joey

Our warmest and heartfelt condolences go out to Mary's family, friends and loved ones.
Her example of Christ's love and compassion is forever attached to her identity and
legacy. The love she cultivated in her family certainly warrants the sorrow of her absence.
But her integrity, loyalty, and compassion, bring us to realize that there is rejoicing in heaven, and she will continue to shine through the lives of her children and grandchildren.
