Cecil Savage Obituary



SHELTON, Cecil Ray Savage, 87, of rural Shelton died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Valentine United Methodist Church in Valentine. Burial will be in Kilgore Cemetery in Kilgore.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home in Valentine. Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge on local arrangements.

Mr. Savage was born March 28, 1921, near Kilgore to Robert and Alma (Osterman) Savage.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Gaylene Taylor of Avoca, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Judith Savage of Shelton; a brother, Wallace Savage of Cove, Ore.

Additional survivors include grandchildren and their spouses, Timothy and Sharon Savage, Edgerton, Kan., Jay and Laura Taylor of West Des Moines, Iowa, Cynthia and Kyle Catt, Panama, Troy and Cris Taylor, Waukee, Iowa, Staci and Darin Greunke, Winside, Christine Johannsen, Louisville, Darcie and Aaron Kester, Gilbert, Iowa.

Additional survivors include nine great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

He grew up and attended school in the Kilgore area. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Hart on Oct. 28, 1940. Cecil was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a longtime Cherry County rancher who loved working with his Angus cattle in his beloved sandhills. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, playing cards, shooting pool, hunting and especially fishing. He entertained family and friends with his humorous stories.

He was a member of the Shelton United Methodist Church and the Cody American Legion Post 319.

He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter and guardian angel, Donna Lea Savage, his parents, a son-in-law, Marvin Taylor, four brothers, Robert, Milton, Max and Floyd Savage and two sisters, Ruth Wyant and May Frers.

Though being gone many years, we still think very fondly of Cecil. He was our neighbor in Valentine & was always helpful if we needed an extra hand. Miss him.
