Fremont Bell Obituary
Cowboy, farm advisor and international livestock consultant Fremont "Monte" Livingston Bell of Orland, Calif., died Sunday at age 76.
Born and raised in Denver, Colo., Monte spent several summers during his youth as a cowboy in Texas and Arizona. He attended Colorado A & M University, Fort Collins, where he earned a B.S. in animal husbandry and range management. As a student, Monte distinguished himself as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and National Square Dance Champion. During summers he worked as a ranch hand, hunting guide and guide for mute-trips down the Grand Canyon.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, Monte accepted a position as Farm Advisor with the Sacramento County Farm Advisor's office and, later, with the University of California Cooperative Extension Service in Glenn County, where he retired with emeritus status after 35 years of service.
Upon retirement from the service, Monte continued his passion for extension by launching a new career as an international livestock consultant and holistic resource management expert. As a consultant, Monte volunteered his expertise across five continents in more than 25 countries, including Libya, Kenya, Lesotho, Indonesia, Armenia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and many others.
Monte was a member of numerous professional organizations and received many awards and commendations for his service, including Rangeland Manager of the Year and Distinguished Service Award for teaching.
Monte is survived by Shirley, his wife of 50 years; sons Scott and Doug Bell; daughter Gini Bellawala; and six grandchildren.
A tribute to Monte's life will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Black Butte Lake Observation Point with Pastor Tina Banfill officiating. Immediately following the service a reception will be held at Eagles' Hall in Orland, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Monte to: University of California Cooperative Extension Service, P.O. Box 697, Orland 95963. Donations may also be made to a charity of your choice.
