Janet "Jan" Rae Karrer
August 13, 1936 – June 12, 2024
GRAND ISLAND - Janet "Jan" Rae Karrer, 87, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away on June 12, 2024 in Topeka. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 18th at 10:30 am at All Faiths Funeral Home, with Dan Naranjo officiating. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Grand Island City Cemetery.
Jan was born on August 13, 1936 in Stanton, NE to Leland and Norine (Mitchell) Carson. She was raised and received her education in Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1954. She then attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln for one year before transferring to the University of Nebraska Medical Center and earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
On March 29, 1959, Jan was united in marriage to James Stewart Karrer in Norfolk, NE. The couple lived in Nebraska City, Kansas City, and Sedalia, MO before moving to Grand Island in 1966. Four children were blessed into this union. Jan worked at St. Francis Medical Center for 12 years.
Jan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Hand Bell Choir, Riverside Golf Club, and P.E.O. - Chapter CK. She served on the Grand Island Concert Association Board and the Grand Island Library Board. Jan was an active volunteer in many organizations including, Leadership Grand Island, Daughter of the Nile, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and serving as Co-Chair of the Stuhr Museum Fund Drive. Through the years, she supported her kids by being involved in the school PTA, Cub Scouts and 4-H. Jan enjoyed bridge, golf, fishing, playing piano, watching any Nebraska sport (especially women's basketball), playing games, and baking with her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Stew; children, Julie (Craig) Driskel, James (Joan) Karrer, Nancy (Tom) McNeill, Steve (Stephanie) Karrer; five grandchildren, Janna, Jimmy, Adam, Lindy, Ella; and one great granddaughter, Della Rae.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Jim Carson (brother), and grandson Andrew.
Memorials are suggested to Stuhr Museum and the Grand Island Public Library.
Jan's family would also like to thank the staff of Brewster Place and Elara Caring Hospice in Topeka, who took such loving and professional care of our wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
