Jeffery D. Hruby
July 27, 1953 - July 5, 2024
Jeffery D. Hruby, born on July 27, 1953, in Loup City, Nebraska, to Robert and Alice Woody Hruby, passed away suddenly on July 5, 2024, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island, Nebraska. Jeff was a beloved member of his community, known for his warm spirit and dedication to family and friends.
Jeff graduated from Ord High School in 1971 and pursued welding at Hastings Tech. His career began at Kawasaki in Lincoln and later included a tenure at Holdrege Seed and Supply. Jeff and Dennis Greenland later started G & H Manufacturing. In 1981, Jeff realized his entrepreneurial dream by purchasing a grocery store in Arcadia, Nebraska, which he successfully ran with the help of his sister Julie for over 30 years as Hruby's Market. Through this venture, Jeff formed many cherished friendships and connections within the community. In addition to his work at the market, he also drove a school bus route for the Arcadia School District.
After retiring from Hruby's Market, Jeff continued to work, sharing his talents as a teller at Fonner Park and as a seasonal grounds crew member at Jackrabbit Golf Course, roles he held until his passing. He created a special bond with his Jackrabbit family.
Jeff was preceded in death by his previous wife, Maxine Hruby, through whom he gained two stepchildren, Brandon Drahota and Kristen Gydesen, and three grandchildren. In 2003, Jeff found love again and married Vicky (Briseno). Shortly after meeting Vicky, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where their 20-year marriage was filled with joy, adventure, laughter, and deep bonds with family and friends. Through this union, Jeff welcomed three more stepchildren: Amy (Mark) Zuck, Jamie (Trevor) Ottmann, and Lynsey (Jay) McElroy, along with six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Jeff and Vicky spent over two decades together enjoying golfing, traveling, spending time with loved ones, watching their grandchildren grow, and their 4 o'clock ritual of R&R was a testament to the simple joys they cherished together.
Jeff was embraced by Vicky's extended family and was cherished by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, his previous wife Maxine, and numerous aunts and uncles. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vicky Hruby; his step-children; grandchildren; great-grandchild; his siblings Dianne (Lyle) Hunkins, Bob (Laura Hayes) Hruby, and Julie (Steve) Dorsey; many cherished nieces and nephews; his two aunts; his mother and father-in-law; and many extended family members and loving friends whom he considered family. Jeff's legacy of kindness, community, and love for his family and friends will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jeff's life will be celebrated, Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Robin Bashir as celebrant. Cremation will follow the service. With interest I read the obit of Jeffery Hruby since I am from a "Hruby Clan" started by Frank Hruby & Wilhemina. They came with little Joseph, my grandfather to Weston area and settled on a farm near Touhy. The names in the obit did not reveal to me any connection with my Dominic D. Hruby family tree. Still, I send 'Eternal Rest' prayers for him and wishes for great memories to his family.

I was just thinking about Jeff the other day. I knew him in Ord High School, but we became good friends after that when we both lived in Lincoln. He worked hard and played hard and we had some fun times.
I still have some G&H livestock panels that remind me of Jeff and Denny and the welding shop in Arcadia.
He has many friends that will miss him. Sorry for your loss.
Rest in peace my friend.
