Julia Royer Obituary

Julia Ida Royer, 90, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. A private burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery prior to service time.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Royer was born Oct. 6, 1921, near Logan, Iowa, to John "Harley" and Effie (Foglesong) Hunt.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Joseph W. Royer of Grand Island; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Janet Royer of Spofford, N.H., and Jeffrey and Joan Royer of Omaha.

Additional survivors include four grandchildren, Jamey Royer, Jennifer and husband, Nathan Anderson, Jonathan Royer and Kimberly Royer, two great-grandchildren, Noah and Ivy Anderson.

In Julia's youth, her family moved to Iowa City and at the age of nine, they relocated to Woodbine, Iowa, where she received her education graduating with the class of 1939. Following graduation, she went to work for Mutual of Omaha.

She was united in marriage to Joseph W. Royer on April 24, 1943, in Montgomery, Ala. She was able to be with her husband, Joe during his 14 months military training in the states before he was sent to Europe. While he was overseas, she returned to her job in Omaha with Mutual of Omaha until his discharge in December of 1945. The couple then lived in Woodbine, Iowa, where Julia helped her husband in the appliance business. She was very active in church offices until June, 1952 at which time they moved to Grand Island where they remained. To this union two sons were born, David and Jeffrey. She spent their formative years enjoying their activities. She also worked out of their home, helping her husband in his second office.

Julia loved spending time with her friends, which included playing bridge. She continued her work at church, traveled with her husband and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and family.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and had served as a member of the Administrative Board and Board of Trustees of her church. She was also a member of the YWCA, Platt Duetsche, the Liederkranz and the Grand Island Women's Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or Health Connect at Home Hospice, St. Francis Medical Center.
