Melvin was born on September 23. 1927, on the family farm near Giltner, son of Edward and Alice (Sundermeier) Obermeier. Mel graduated from Giltner High School in 1944 and attended one year at UNL before returning to Giltner to farm.

On December 5, 1950, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean war and was honorably discharged on September 5, 1952, when he returned to Giltner to resume farming.

Melvin married the love of his life, Maryellen Walker on July 25, 1954. They made a life together on the farm and in the home where he grew up. They also raised their five children there. After his retirement from farming, he worked as a crop adjuster to keep active and involved. He also enjoyed his coffee groups and visiting during the week.

Melvin was a member and usher of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a Shriner, the Masonic Lodge, Giltner Lions Club, American Legion, VFW all of which he belonged for over 55 years. He was also a 4-H Leader when his children were young. Melvin enjoyed and could be found working at the Lions concession stand at the baseball/softball games during the summer. He enjoyed bowling and was in numerous leagues over the years. He looked forward to watching his kids and then grandkids in any sport or activity they were involved in at the time. He was very proud of all their accomplishments. He continued supporting all the Giltner students for as long as he was able. Melvin was kind to everyone, had a gentle heart, a strong love for his family and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Maryellen of Grand Island; children, Randall Obermeier of Grand Island, Monte (Sue) Obermeier of Giltner, Douglas (Rhonda) Obermeier of Lincoln, Pamela (Dan) Hastings of Giltner; daughter-in-law, Barb Obermeier of Odessa; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren with three on the way; brother-in-law and spouse, Cecil (Jan) Walker; and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gregory "Greg" Obermeier; granddaughter, Alicia Obermeier Harvey; brother and spouse, Clyde (Rita) Obermeier, sisters and spouses, Lucille (Gerald) Hunnicutt and Rose Mary (Calvin) Hansen; brother-in-law, Joe Walker.
