Nancy Spiehs Obituary

Nancy Spiehs was born September 14, 1959 in Grand Island, NE and passed away the morning of October 7, 2025. She is survived by her son Jeff and his wife Melany in Omaha NE, her son Jason in Geneva, NE, grand children Anna, Lauren, Caroline (Jeff & Melany) and Jay (Jason). In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her siblings Sally Burkholder, Peggy Haverland (Tom), Mark Kaufman (Helen), and Lisa Snyder. Nancy was a devoted wife to her husband Jim for 43 years. She met her husband during their senior year of high school and they were married in 1979. Jim passed away on January 7, 2023.

Nancy enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, playing games, taking them for coffee and shopping trips along with reading, and traveling with her husband, children and their families.

Nancy earned a Masters Degree from UNMC in nursing. She worked for Good Samaritan Health System in Kearney, NE, Methodist Health System and AseraCare in Omaha. Her career led her to be the Director of Hospice Care at Methodist and AseraCare. Her philosophy of caring for people at the end of their life was based on real presence-spending time by their side during their last days, advocating for dignity and respect for the dying, and comforting families of their loved ones in how they process loss and grief.

Nancy retired from her career in health care in her late 50s so she could spend more time with her grandchildren. Unfortunately, at age 60 she received a dementia diagnosis. That didn't stop her from spending time caring for her kids and grandkids and trying to remain independent and in community with her friends. She valued her faith, time spent on projects with her husband, Jim, and most of all spending time with those she loved. Nancy will be missed by all her friends and family, A service to remember Nancy will be held at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha on Thursday, October 23rd. A meal and reception will follow the service.
