Velma Taubenheim Obituary

Velma Taubenheim

January 31, 1932 - September 29, 2025

Velma Lorraine Taubenheim, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, was called to her eternal home on September 29, 2025, at the age of 93. Visitation and funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Broken Bow. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd, from 5 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating her life will take place on Saturday, October 4th, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Ted Bodjanac officiating. Burial will follow at the Broken Bow Cemetery. A register book can be signed during the day at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Online words of remembrance or condolences may be left at www.govierbrothers.com.

Born on the family farm nine miles north of Shelton, Velma was the daughter of Clarence and Hulda Baade. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Shelton, where she also attended parochial school. Velma graduated from Wood River High School in 1949. On October 23, 1955, she was united in marriage to Gerald Taubenheim in Kearney, Neb.

The couple lived in Lawton, Okla. during Gerald's time in the service, later settling in Broken Bow in 1957, where they raised their five children. Velma's organizational skills quickly became the backbone of the family. She mastered the art of scheduling activities, events and routines for a busy, large family with grace. More importantly, she was the heart of the Taubenheim family home.

Velma had a strong faith, believing that one should always serve the Lord with gladness. As a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, she dedicated much of her time to the church, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and serving in numerous roles with the ladies' group. Her talents extended beyond the church, as she enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and spending time with her crochet and Extension clubs. Those who knew Velma will always remember her for her homemade noodles, chocolate pie and her unwavering love of ice cream.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Gerald, of 69 years; and their five children, spouses, and families: two sons, Donald (Sherri) Taubenheim of Proctorville, Ohio and Scott Taubenheim (Babette Manske) of Panama City Beach, Fla.; three daughters, all in Nebraska, Julie (Rick) Roby of Grand Island, D'Ette (Jeff) Scholtz of Grand Island and Kylie (Roger) Miller of Dorchester.

In addition, she is survived by ten grandchildren: Zachary (Holly) Taubenheim of South Bloomfield, Ohio, Kyle (Olivia) Taubenheim of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jessica Taubenheim of Charleston, W.Va., Brenton (Tiffany) Roby of Bennet, Neb., Amanda (Matt) Matejka of Lincoln, Neb., Kayla Scholtz (John Gits) of Phillips, Neb., Ryan Scholtz of Grand Island, Neb., Brittnie (Kyle) Kotrous of Lincoln, Neb., LeAnn Miller of Gibbon, Minn. and Kendra (Trev) Shibuya of Norcross, Ga. Velma was also blessed with 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Luetta Lammers of Hazard, Neb. and Ruby Hatfield of Kearney, Neb.; sister-in-law, Venia Whitesel of Broken Bow; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Vivian Fichtner; granddaughter, Janelle Miller; and great-grandchildren, Natasha, Lars Jr. and Miles.
