Christopher Bordoni Obituary

Bordoni, Cpl. Christopher David

Cpl. Christopher David Bordoni, born August 3, 1990 in Ithaca, NY, died April 3, 2012 as a result of injuries sustained January 18, 2012 in Kajaki, Afghanistan. Christopher passed away at the San Antonio Military Medical Center where he had been receiving medical treatment since January 22nd. Christopher was a graduate of Ithaca High School, class of 2008. He was an exceptional athlete with a passion for soccer. Christopher loved to laugh and make others laugh as well; we could always rely on him to play practical jokes. Chris had a determined mind and excelled in everything he wanted to accomplish. He pushed himself to prepare for his most important achievement: becoming a United States Marine. Chris was an exceptional United States Marine. His MOS was 0311, Riflemen. After he was attached to the 1st Battalion 6th Marines regiment, Chris served two tours in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012. Receiving the Leatherneck Award for High Shooter in Boot Camp, he went on to receive four Expert Marksmanship Badges. Chris also received the Purple Heart, Marine Corps Good Conduct Metal, Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Cpl Bordoni has also been nominated to receive the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NAM). Christopher was dedicated and strong willed in achieving his goal of becoming the best Marine on every level. Christopher is survived by his wife, Jessica Bordoni; mother, Carol Bordoni Sprague; father, Timothy Bordoni; sister, Jacqueline Bordoni; and brother, Casey Bordoni. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, David and Phyllis Sprague of Cayuga, NY; and paternal grandparents, Camillo and MaryEllen Bordoni of Ithaca NY. Chris also has many aunts, uncles, and cousins that, in addition, will forever hold Chris in their hearts. Chris was a young Marine that died protecting the freedom and security of our Nation. He is our Hero, and will never be forgotten. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Marcoux on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Private interment with full Marine Corps Honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, from 2 to 7 p.m. NOTE: CALLING HOURS AND MASS ARE PUBLIC. INTERMENT IS PRIVATE. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris' memory may be directed to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd., Suite 102, PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057 semperfifund.org/donate. Arrangements are by the Bangs Funeral Home.

To Chris' family,

Chris popped in my head this morning and I wanted to share with you why. I'm sure Memorial Day is a very important day to you so I felt compelled to reach out. I don't know if you remember, me but Chris and I knew each other well as respected adversaries. I wore uniform number 12 for the Vestal Xtreme and met Chris on the soccer field when were probably 10 or 11 years old. Chris played outside defense and I played outside midfield so we met often. We both had a kind of rough around the edges, hardnosed, dont mess with me or my teammates type of play. Vestal vs. Ithaca soccer was about as rough as the sport gets as it was riddled with yellow and red cards, mud, and even blood. I loved playing against Ithaca and battling it out with Chris.
This relationship continued all through high school as we met on the field. Chris and I had a strange relationship. We would smile and poke fun at each other moments after throwing elbows into eachothers ribs fighting over that 50/50 ball in the corner. I can recall Chris reaching out a hand to me to help up his adversary after a good scrap. He was my favorite opponent.
I last saw Chris on the soccer field our senior year of high school. He wasnt playing that game, but he yelled to me from the sideline Hey Hoover! I heard you joined the Army! whilst boasting his gray Marines PT Shirt with the sleeves cut off. We joked around for a bit and talked smack about each others respective choice of service branch. We shook hands and wished each other luck.
I was on my second deployment, 2012 timeframe, this time in northern Afghanistan, when my mother sent me an email asking if I knew who the young Marine in the Ithaca newspaper was. I knew him well and am honored to be on his team.

It is noble indeed to give one's life for others. Yet the loss of our sons and daughters is great and painful. Please be comforted by this promise.(Isaiah 2:4) . . .And he will certainly render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. And they will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore. . .

Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers ([email protected]) is an organization with groups throughout the country who strive to send handmade prayer shawls and/ or lap robes to families who have lost a loved one in service to our country. Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA would like to honor your son and husband's sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] with the names and addresses and what they would like to receive. We will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address, as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. CPL. Bordoni, your Blue star has turned Gold....you have been deployed to guard the gates of Heaven...rest easy Soldier, rest easy, Son. You have earned the right.

"When a man or woman enters our Armed Forces, their Service Banner contains a Blue Star.
It is by fate and sacrifice their Blue Star turns to Gold."

The Gold Star Lapel Button's unique design incorporates the symbols that indicate the family's loss:the Laurel Wreath Border signifies VALOR, the purple field signifies the family's grief or mourning, the GOLD STAR has been used since WW I to signify, "Died in a Combat Theater".

CPL. BORDONI..your life cost you, it cost us, our nation has lost a hero....Heaven has gained a son.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Chris will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I Salute You.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to CPL Christopher D. Bordoni our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Chris. And to Chris it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Chris, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Chris' family and loved ones. Semper Fidelis !
