I do not recall exactly when Ed and I first met. It was probably around 1986 when one of his graduate students, Ron Lasky, came to my office looking for some advice for his calculations. It was perfect timing - I just got tenure and was anxiously looking for new problems. For the next 11 years, up until Ed retired from Cornell, Ed was my closest collaborator and friend. He introduced me to all sorts of interesting materials related problems – together we published 47 papers. More importantly, my graduate students benefited tremendously from his advice.
It was great fun working with Ed. He had a deep knowledge of all aspect of physics, chemistry and engineering. He loved science and always made time for scientific discussions. He was energetic and enthusiastic about his work. He was a great mentor, and many of his PhD students hold important positions in industry and academia. To me, he embodies the ideals of a scholar: relentless in the pursuit of knowledge, generous in sharing ideas and knowledge, and a great teacher and mentor of students and young researchers.
My scientific career owns a great debt to Ed. It has been a privilege to know and work with him.
