Ernest Szabo Obituary

ERNEST C. SZABO
ETNA, NY - Ernest C. Szabo (Ernie), 86, of Etna, NY, died on Thursday, December 11, 2008, after an extended illness.
Ernie was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on March 11, 1922, the son of the late Frank and Julia Molnar Szabo. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army, where he received the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
Ernie grew up in the Fall Creek area and settled in the Etna area after his return from the war. He worked for NYSEG as a lineman, retiring after 32 years. Ernie loved fishing and flying his private planes with his Etna friends. He was an accomplished carpenter and an avid craftsman, residing in the house he built for over 60 years. He was a loving husband, a giving father, a "true" friend.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Edith (Rollins) Szabo; his sister, Helen Szabo; his brothers, Frank (Bill) Szabo and Red Everetts; sister-in-law, Sue Szabo (wife of Edward Szabo); stepdaughters, Diane Sherwood (Neil), Gloria Varga (Jim), Janice Knout (Chet Brion), Dixie Mack (Jeremy Tyler); grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry and Edward "Huck" Szabo.
Friends and family may attend calling hours from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008, at Bangs Funeral Home. Services will be held immediately following calling hours. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ernie's family. My dad, Windy, worked with Ernie in the Line Department and counted Ernie as one of his good friends.

To Edie and Ernies extended family, Deepest sympathy and prayers go to all of you at this sad time. I grew up with Ernie in good ol` Fall Creek and remember as a little kid Ernie going into service. The stories he told us of the war kept all our attention. He was the one in the neighborhood that went to and from war. Kept in touch through the years and was sorry to see his health go down. Respectfully, Marcia & Jim Miller

Dear Edie, We were sorry to read about Ernie but for the past year or so he has not had much quality of life. The Lord watches over us and takes care of us as he knows best. Pete enjoyed his friendship with Ernie and knows he is in a much better place. Take comfort from your family and friends and know that you were a wonderful caretaker. Love, Pete and Lois Barber
