George Gesslein Obituary

Gesslein, George John, II

Lansing: George John Gesslein II, age 52, of Lansing, NY, was called home by the Lord on Sunday morning, February 24, 2013, at Cayuga Ridge Nursing Home in Ithaca, NY after a courageous 5 year battle with cancer. George was born just a few blocks away at the old Tompkins County Hospital on February 7, 1961, a son of George John Gesslein and Carol Lynne Gesslein (Mickelson). George was a self-taught computer programmer who worked for a number of local firms and ultimately set his sights on creating a really good algebraic manipulation program to solve difficult math equations. From this effort was born "Mathomatic", an easy to use math program that is now available in many forms and is in use throughout the world (mathomatic.org). Survivors include his parents, Carol and George Gesslein of Lansing, NY; his four siblings, Lisa L. Wheeler, (Mark) of Lansing, NY, Laura L. Gesslein (Tim Holloway) of Williams, OR, Karl D. Gesslein of Wilseyville, NY, and Paul M. Gesslein of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Trevor, Bryce, Ryan and Nicole Wheeler, Ariel and Ito Holloway, Orion S. Gesslein; and cousins, David, Alexis, and Grant Mickelson and Peter Castellani; his uncle, Michael J. Mickelson (Claudia Roberts) of Charlestown, MA; and his aunts, Irene Castellani (Patrizio) of Santa Rosa, CA and Judith J. Mickelson. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Hospicare, 172 King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Cancer Resource Center, 612 West State Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. Interment will be in the North Lansing Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2013.

I worked with George to port his Mathomatic library to iPhone. It was an ideal fit for the iPhone because it was compact and efficient. I talked to George periodically and helped him test Mathomatic as he developed new features. He was a hard worker, dedicated to making a lasting impact and creating an elegant mathematics solution. He will be missed.

George and I shared a common interest in mathematics and open source software development. He loved when I would test Mathomatic, his open source pride and joy, find little bugs, and suggest new features. I counted him as one of the good guys. He made positive contributions to the world and he will be missed.
