George Ungewitter Obituary

Ungewitter, George Wilhelm

George Wilhelm Ungewitter died at the age of 91 on Friday, February 19, 2016. He was a kind, gentle and generous man who worked hard and lived a simple yet very full life. More than anything, he loved his family and in return they dearly loved their GEWI. He was very proud to be a naturalized United States citizen and took great interest in local, state and national issues of the day. George always looked forward to his opportunity to vote. George is mourned by and will live on in the memories of both his family and many friends. His immediate survivors include his sister Renate Greenshields, nieces Jane Winlow and Maria Zinman and his nephews Tim and George Greenshields. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews as well as several cousins. Friends may join the family for a celebration of George's life at 11 AM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 45 Hamlin Street in Cortland, NY. A reception at church will follow the funeral service. Donations may be made in George's memory to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Nursery School or Communion Cup Funds in care of the church.

I was George's insurance agent in Cortland NY. He was kind and gentle soul.
May he rest in peace with the Lord.

I am so sorry to read of my good neighbor's death. He was a fine man and my family were very fond of him and knew him for many years. One year, at our library book sale, he told me about the book(s) his sister had written about their growing up years and subsequent years. He made sure that I had a copy and it now has a place of honor in the Southworth Library book collection. He was, indeed a kind and gentle man and brave and independent in his old age. I shall miss him very much.

George has led an honorable life. He was a quiet, unassuming and humble man. He had faith in his Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. In the Winter when he couldn't get to church on Sunday he would stay home and read one of his father's (Lutheran minister) sermons. He has been an example to me of integrity, steadfastness and loyalty. George loved flowers, plants and trees and his favorite outings were to the Arboretum in Ithaca N.Y. I will dearly miss my cousin "Gewi" (George) as we called him. Thank you for being part of our family!
