Jane Dickinson Obituary

Jane Genung Dickinson died on February 1, 2011 at Bridges of Cornell Heights, her home for the past year. She was 81. Jane was born December 18, 1929, in Washington, D.C., and was the youngest daughter of Albert Benjamin Genung and Mildred Derrick Genung. She spent her childhood in Washington, where her father was an agricultural economist and a speechwriter for the Department of Agriculture. The Genung family spent summers in Freeville, NY, where Albert grew up, and when he left government service in 1947, the family moved to Freeville permanently. Jane graduated from McKinley High School in Washington and then took another senior year at Dryden High School, graduating in 1948. She married Charles "Buck" Dickinson, a Dryden classmate, in 1950. They had four children, Charles, Rachel, Anne, and Amy. The Dickinson family lived in Ludlowville for about a decade then moved to a family dairy farm in Freeville in the mid-1960s. Jane and Buck divorced in 1972, and Jane began working as a typist in the College of Engineering at Cornell. In 1977, when her youngest daughter began college, Jane applied to and was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell, where she spent the next four years being the oldest student in the college. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1981 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing in 1985. She taught for several years in Cornell's writing program then spent the rest of her career as a professor in the writing program at Ithaca College. In the early 1980s, she moved to a little Greek Revival farmhouse she inherited on the edge of Freeville, where she lived for the next thirty years with a succession of house cats. She loved reading, writing, gardening, and watching movies, all of which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She had a wide circle of friends who enjoyed her wry sense of humor, and she threw some legendary dinner parties in her day. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Lena Carver. She is survived by her sisters, Jean Pearson and Mildred Sherwood; and her sister-in-law, Anne Dickinson Murray; her children, Charles Dickinson of Florida, Rachel Dickinson (Tim Gallagher) of Freeville, Anne Dickinson (Brian Adams) of Rochester, NY, and Amy Dickinson (Bruno Schickel) of Dryden, NY; 10 grandchildren (Annie and Sam Scogin; Railey Savage; Clara, Jack, and Gwendolyn Gallagher; Benjamin, Ashley and Ian Dickinson; and Emily Mason); several nieces and nephews; and many close friends. For the past forty years, Jane suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, a debilitating disease that eventually robbed her of her mobility and finally, her ability to stay in her own home. Her family would like to thank the staff at Bridges, Dr. Ann Costello, and Hospice for their kindness and care. There will be calling hours at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main Street, Dryden, NY from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011, and the funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011, in the Freeville United Methodist Church, followed by a luncheon. Please direct memorial contributions to the SPCA of Tompkins County, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, NY 14850. www.perkinsfuneralhome.com

I´m often reminded of Jane when we go out to breakfast at a local place. The smallish room is set in an old barn. The farm windows, wood floors farm-house feel bring back memories of the Dickenson family.
I wish I´d had more time to get to know Jane. I always appreciated her way of seeing, and getting to the heart of things and people.

Remembering Mrs Dickinson in her home, cooking eggs and bacon for who ever was there and it seemed like many people came to the farm. It was a home of joy filled with singing, art, knitting, humor, food, cats, a dog.

In assisted living when I visited Jane she was as sharp as ever. She made me laugh, and helped me see things more clearly.

I feel lucky and grateful to have known her and the joy she brought to my family.

To Rachel, Anne, Amy, and Dickey, We're so sorry we missed Jane's funeral. We have just now(2/18/11) learned of her passing. She was a dear friend for over 60 years, as were all of you whenever you visited Newark Valley. We will always remember and chuckle over Jane's wry and insightful sense of humor. Remember that when Jane and Buck were first married,. they lived in my parents' apartment on the family farm in Newark Valley. Ethel and I have many fond memories of our friendship. She was a unique and wonderful lady.

Dear Rachel, Amy and Family,
I want to offer my sincerest condolences on the passing of Jane. Though I did not know her well, I had the same fondness for her that I have for all of the women in your family. I have admired the mighty Queens for many years – your strength, vitality, intelligence, and humor, and I know that Jane embodied all of these qualities. She was blessed with a full life and has left a remarkable legacy. My prayers are with you and your family as you mourn her passing and rejoice the life she led.

Through Amy, I feel as if I know the whole Dickinson family. My hearts go out to all of you. I have such a distinct memory of visiting Jane (with Amy, Emily and my son, Will) in Freeville on a gorgeous summer day some 10 years ago. The house and garden were both so warm and friendly -- as was Jane.

Will you girls be singing at the funeral? It would be tough, but I hope you can. Again, I have fond memories of listening to the three of you harmonizing in that sweet little church.

Dear Family,
I only met Jane one time. She was so kind and sweet that I have never forgotten our time together. One of Jane's lifelong friends, Joan Hance Spaulding, was my loving companion until her death in 2005. I'm certain that Joan and Jane are having a joyous heavenly reunion. I share your loss.

To Jane's family,
My heart goes out to you all. What great memories I have of our families togeather over the years. Your mother will be greatly missed by all who knew her. I know my mother has her arms open wide and ready to see her. Talk about a dinner party, they will have many.

Anne, Rachel and Amy-
I always thought you had the coolest Mom in the world - she was smart, funny, insightful and outspoken. And always willing to impart her "words of wisdom" on us as teenagers visiting your home in Freeville. So terrific that those wonderful traits were past on to her daughters.
My thoughts are with you.

February 5, 2011

I knew Jane in high school, but came to know her more fully when she worked for Cornell and I was also employed there. Her life is a story of strength, courage, and a determination to make living meanin gful and worthwhile for herself and her children, no matter the difficulties she had to overcome to reach that goal. Her life was,and is, a lesson in how to rise above adversity and physical pain. My sincere sympathy goes out to all of her family. Joyce Holmes McAllister

Jane, you and Mom are reunited! I'll miss you both for the rest of my life. Your niece, Nancy

I will always remember the warmth of the Dickenson home on Mill Street whenever I visited as a young child. The love, singing, sewing, art, imagination and laughter made it "home" and Jane stood at the stove most of the time making meals, feeding the cats and Tippy and talking about some important event in the outside world. Her views were always thought provoking. Jane's humor and wit are the characteristics that most took my attention when I visited her last year. It's good to know, I thought, that through all the changes we go through in life there still remains our essence of love, laughter and light that shine through the years touching hearts and minds so acutely. I will miss Jane and I will remember the laughter and inspiration she has imprinted on me. My heart goes out to all who grieve the loss of Jane to our physical world. My prayers and love are with you Anne, Amy, Rachael and your friends and families.

I remeber the cats at the farmhouse on Mill Street. I also remember the time Anne and I decided that the cats in the barn needed a home and I convinced my dad to come and get one for me. That little kitten put up the biggest fight, and attempted to shred my poor Dad as he tried to get his hands on it. We abandoned the idea and retreated to the house for first aid where the 'house cats' looked down on all the fuss from their favorite spots in the kitchen. Jane provided the nursing and we all had a great laugh about it afterwards.

My condolences to Rachel, Anne, and Amy and all the family.

Randy and I have many fond memories of Jane. She was a schoolmate of ours and we have kept up all these years. However, we have not seen her in these last years but she has always been on our minds. One does not forget dear Jane. I remember her sincere interest in our lives and never really complaining about her suffering. I loved discussing books with her even though we didn't always agree. She leaves a wonderful legacy of humor, perseverenace in adversity, love of family and life to inspire us all.

While still at the dairy farmhouse on Mill Street, Jane invited us to keep our small flock of sheep in her pasture. The creek rose after a heavy rain and we made a quick trip to the pasture to pull wet sheep onto high ground. We and Jane got a good laugh over this. She laughed a lot - I remember.

We're saddened to hear of her passing.

Jane, our companion of the lunchroom and the hallways of Gannett Center... my last memory of her, as were so many others, is of laughing together. I had told her I had had my cavernous dark noisome basement cleaned out for my grandchildren. Gone were the cobwebs, broken furniture, treacherous litter, where they tunneled and hid unsafely. "Miriam," she said sadly (only whispering then) "You ruined it for them." Indomitable woman. We'll miss her.
