JOSEPH RICHARD "LEFTY" ECKER
LANSING - Joseph Richard "Lefty" Ecker, 76, of 115 Woodsedge Dr., Lansing, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Cayuga Medical Center. He was born in Portland Point, son of the late Herman and Justina Fleishhaker.
Lefty served with the United States Army during the Korean War and was a retired supervisor with the Ithaca branch of the United States Post Office. Prior to his twenty seven year career with the post office he worked at International Salt and the Ithaca Gun Company. Lefty was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was an outstanding high school athlete and a star pitcher in the old Ithaca City Baseball League. He was an avid supporter of the New York Yankees and Syracuse University Basketball and was a longtime member of All Saints Church in Lansing.
Lefty is survived by his son, Jim Ecker of Champaign, IL; and his former wife and friend, Cathy Jones of Lansing. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Ecker; sisters, Elsie (Richard) Zifchock and Anna (Bill) Wagner, all of Lansing; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Lefty was also predeceased by his brother, John "Hauncey" Ecker.
Funeral services will be celebrated by Rev. Scott Kubinski on Monday, April 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lefty's memory may be made to All Saints Church, 347 Ridge Rd., Lansing, NY 14882.
