Michael Sobel Obituary

Sobel, Michael V. M.D.

Michael V. Sobel, M.D., a rheumatologist and silver life master bridge player, died at his home in Tiverton, RI, early on Monday, July 4, of complications associated with diabetes. He was 76. Dr. Sobel came from a family of physicians. He counted his father, brother, two uncles, three cousins, and one of his sons as colleagues in the medical professions. Born May 10, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, he spent his childhood in the Bronx, near the zoo and botanical gardens. He was a graduate of Cornell University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Despite the early onset of his own illness, he distinguished himself through a full career until his retirement in 2003. He was recognized as an astute clinician and served as a mentor to many, practicing medicine and teaching in New Haven, CT, Boston and Fall River, MA, and Ithaca, NY. An avid bicyclist, cook, woodworker, and serious student of history, he enjoyed reading, many forms of word play, and music. He met his wife, Pamela Cook, after he built a harpsichord from a kit and applied to her for lessons on how to play it. He is survived by his wife, their daughter, Amanda Sobel, two sons from a previous marriage, Jeremy and Daniel Sobel, and two grandchildren. His brother, Stephen, and sister, Dava, also mourn his loss. According to his wishes, Dr. Sobel was cremated. In lieu of a funeral, the family will hold a memorial service some months from now. Those who remember him fondly and wish to honor him are encouraged to make a gift to his favorite charity, Doctors Without Borders.

A memorable and remarkable person; I am honored to be part of his family. As a youngster, he opened my eyes to Rheumatology and I remain ever grateful.
