Michael Tagliavento Obituary

Tagliavento, Michael (Mike "Tag")

Ithaca: Michael (Mike "Tag") Tagliavento, 37, of Ithaca, died Friday, April 13, 2012, at Cayuga Medical Center after a long battle with lymphoma. Born in Ithaca, he was the son of Jim and Judy Tagliavento, who survive him. Mike worked for Bumblebee Painters. He was the co-owner of Sh*tLuck Clothing and the Rhine House Bar. He was an all-around amazing bike rider on street and dirt, and was an avid golfer and pool player. "Tag" was part of the BMX community since his teens. He was a lifelong member of the FBM BMX team and was a co-creator of BMX videos such as "1201". Mike was a special person to all who knew him. He always lived his life the way he wanted to, traveling the world and making many friends along the way. In addition to his parents, Mike is survived by his sister and best friend, Marlene; special friend, Kate Conroy; close special friends, Leland, Fisher, Steve, Bones and Jeremy; and his faithful dog, Bella. A special thanks to all of his worldwide friends for their generosity and support over the last year. In respecting the wishes of Mike, there will be no calling hours or formal services. The family is being assisted by the Wagner Funeral Home.

April 18, 2012

To the close family and friends of Mike Tag:

I just want to send my sincerest condolences to everyone in this time of sadness. Mike has joined so many of those who have unfortunately lost the battle to this horrific disease, including my dad, Dannie Tanner, who passed in 2010 to lung cancer at 44. Mike was a close friend to my dad in that they played a lot of pool together and went to Las Vegas together a few years back where they had so much fun.

I met Mike a few times before that trip and always thought of him as a nice kid. After hearing of his passing and reading about his accomplishments and the things people have said about him, I've realized what an amazing person Mike was and wish I could have known him better.

Sadly, like my dad, his time was cut short. Until you can join him again, hang on to the memories you have with Mike to get you through the tough times, as you have many coming up ahead. Know that he his watching over you and always with you wherever you go. He's up there, free of pain and suffering, riding his bike, shooting some pool and doing whatever else he liked to do.

I have also found that joining an organization to help fight back against this home wrecking disease helps with dealing with the pain of losing a loved one. I have been a participant in Relay for Life for the past 3 years and have really used it in coping with such a devastating loss. My team is Their Hope..because we are their hope to find a cure. If anyone wants to donate in memory of Mike, visit www.relayforlife.org/cayugacountyNY and search my name in the donate section. All proceeds go to American Cancer Society.

Sending thoughts, prayers, love, and hugs.

FBM's "All Time Low" and Tag's section in particular were a big motivator in getting me to send myself down my first few handrails. Thanks.

April 16, 2012

Mike dug my driveway out of the blizzard of '93 and the following summer shared a wonderful boatride with my daugther and her grandparents on a perfect day on the St. Lawrence River from Kingston, ON to Wellesly Island State Park, NY and back. I remember him as a very special young man. Be at peace Mike. Judy White

Mike was a key figure from the personal era of BMX. That period of riding, the videos and the lifestyles portrayed by role models like Tag are what have moulded me into a deeply passionate BMX rider. MFFBM.

I may not have seen Mike in my adult years, but we spent many summers together as counselors for the Danby Summer Rec Program. Those were the days when Danby was still "small" and everyone seem to know everyone. One thing I always liked about Mike was that "Mike was Mike" You got what you saw and that was it. Marlene, I could not even begin to imagine what you are going through. One thing that Cancer can never take from you are your memories. Hold them close. Judy and Jim, I cold not even begin to fathom losing a child. You are all in my thoughts and my prayers as you try to grasp what has happened. Mike, you now have your wings, fly my friend, fly.
