Lithgow, Sarah Jane Price

1917-2012: Sarah Jane Price Lithgow died peacefully on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 attended by her daughter, Sarah Jane Bokaer. She passed her final years at Clare Bridge Cottage in Ithaca, New York. Sarah was married for sixty-five years to Arthur Lithgow, whom she met at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and with whom she lived a peripatetic and adventurous life in regional theatre, establishing Shakespeare Festivals, starting at Antioch and adding others throughout Ohio and beyond. For several years, when Arthur was at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ, she loved teaching elementary school in nearby Allentown. She is remembered by a generation of classical actors for delicious cast picnics and opening night parties, and she is remembered by all of her family and friends for her wit, her wisdom, and for her dancing the Charleston. A lively writer, she delighted her readers with stories of her rambunctious childhood, growing up in Rochester, NY, next door to the Eastman (Kodak) Mansion, with wild teenage winters in Florida. In the weeks before her death she repeatedly told her caretakers, "I'm being patient and polite and doing it right!" Sarah is survived by her children: David, Robin, John and Sarah Jane; and by thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
