Walter Wasserman Obituary
Walter C. Wasserman, 82, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29 2015 after a brief illness. Born in Berlin, Germany on March 19, 1933, Walt came to the U.S. in 1940 and grew up in New York City until his love of agriculture brought him to Upstate New York in 1952. After proudly serving in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Missouri from 1953 to 1955, he returned to Cornell University, graduating in 1957 and later receiving his Master's degree there in 1966. His bond with Cornell continued throughout his adult life as he spent a distinguished 35 year career first as a Cooperative Extension Agent in Jefferson and Cayuga Counties and later as the Statewide Extension Specialist in Milk Marketing until his retirement in 1992. Walt's passion for agriculture carried over into his personal life where he served as a board member and volunteer at both the Daniel Parrish Witter Agricultural Museum in Syracuse and the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum in Auburn. He was a member and elder at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Auburn and also spent many years as a member and chairman of the Owasco Zoning Board and was a member and former Commodore at the Owasco Yacht Club. Walt is predeceased by many relatives including his loving parents; sister-in-law, Donna Button; brother-in-law, Dale Button; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Wasserman. Walt is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sylvia; sons Neal (Leslie) of West Hartford, CT and Brian (Vicky) of Bend, OR; grandchildren Ryan, Lindsay, TK, Ben, Eric and Molly Wasserman; step-grandchildren Carly, Lindley and Mollie Gorman; brother-in-law Kenton (Barbara) Patchen; and many special nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Friday, September 4, from 4-7pm at the Brew Funeral Home, 48 South St, Auburn. A celebration of Walt's life will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 10am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St, Auburn. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walt's memory may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St, Auburn NY 13021 or the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum, 6880 East Lake Rd, Auburn NY 13021.
